Starting today, Chinese-American drivers in California can utilize a Chinese version of online eLearning to renew their driver’s licenses.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced last Thursday (August 29) the expansion of its free online driver’s license renewal eLearning courses, providing traditional Chinese and Mandarin audio versions to Chinese-American drivers, making the license renewal process more convenient. Previously, the course was only available in English and Spanish.
The online driver’s license renewal course was introduced in 2022, consisting of seven interactive modules, each followed by a small quiz. All modules can be reviewed multiple times, ensuring applicants won’t fail. Applicants can study at any time using a computer, tablet, or any internet-accessible device.
According to the DMV, the online driver’s license renewal course has become a popular choice among Californians since its launch, taking approximately 45 minutes to complete. After finishing the course, some applicants may still need to visit a DMV office to take a photo, provide fingerprints, undergo a vision test, to complete the driver’s license renewal process.
In addition to the online driver’s license renewal course, the DMV also introduced the “Remote Written Test” program in 2022, shifting away from the traditional method of taking a pen-and-paper test in crowded DMV offices.
The “Remote Written Test” system offers 35 languages for applicants to choose from. Testing hours are available from Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., excluding legal holidays. To prevent fraud, applicants need to verify their identity before the test and agree to complete the entire test under monitoring, which includes installing monitoring software on their computer.
