Recently, the topic of “garage morgue” has sparked widespread attention, as a homeowner in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, rented out their garage only for the tenant to use it to store the deceased body of a neighbor.
According to a report by Litchi News, Mr. Pang recently stated that in mid-July, the tenant in question actively contacted his mother, expressing interest in renting the garage and claiming it would be used for storing goods. Due to Mr. Pang’s long absence from the community in question, it was only later that neighbors reminded him that the garage was being used to store the deceased elderly person.
The tenant paid a lump sum of 3000 yuan for a year’s rent (excluding a deposit), but was unwilling to sign a contract. Mr. Pang’s mother also did not insist on signing a written agreement.
Mr. Pang said that the deceased person was an elderly individual from a neighbor’s household. “The tenant originally rented a warehouse from the neighbor to store goods. Later, as the elderly person in the neighbor’s household was nearing the end of their life and wanted to reclaim the warehouse for the placement of the body, the tenant refused to vacate the warehouse, hence resorting to renting my garage to park the deceased neighbor’s body.”
Mr. Pang mentioned that his mother was emotionally affected by the incident, and now she dares not go near the garage.
Following the exposure of the incident, personnel from the local police station stated that they needed to contact their sub-bureau. The sub-bureau, however, mentioned that it was inconvenient to disclose further details.
Mr. Pang stated that he is currently proceeding with legal action. The tenant in question declined to be interviewed.
