Yesterday (18th), a man in Danzhou, Hainan, stopped a police car with his own vehicle, then violently rammed into the police car and even climbed onto the roof of his car to shout. The police reported that the perpetrator has a history of mental illness, sparking skepticism among netizens.
On the evening of August 18th, as reported by the “Qingdao Morning Post”, a sudden incident occurred around 10 p.m. in Danzhou, Hainan. The dashboard camera footage of a car captured a man driving up to the front of a police car, stopping, getting out of the car, and attempting to pull open the door of the police car. When unsuccessful, he repeatedly rammed into the police car.
A video circulating online shows the incident happening on a main street in the downtown area of Danzhou, Hainan. A black Honda suddenly stopped in front of a police car, blocking its path. Subsequently, the male driver in black clothing from the Honda got out and tried to pull open the driver’s door of the police car but was unsuccessful.
Subsequent footage revealed that the offending car collided with the median barrier in the middle of the road, causing vehicles in both lanes to come to a stop. The car continued forward, hitting the rear of the police car before crashing into a green belt.
The driver then climbed onto the roof of his car, shouting loudly, seemingly venting his frustration. In later footage, the man was restrained by on-site personnel.
On the evening of August 18th, the Danzhou Public Security Bureau issued a report stating that the individual involved was a 47-year-old man named He, a native of Danzhou, Hainan. He was driving a sedan along the North Cultural Road in Nada Town towards the intersection of Xinglong Road when he stopped his car in the middle of the road, climbed onto the roof causing traffic congestion. He then proceeded to ram his car, causing damage to surrounding road facilities and vehicles, but no injuries to individuals. He was subsequently subdued.
According to the police report, after preliminary investigation, He has a history of mental illness, and suspicions of alcohol or drug driving have been ruled out. He is currently under criminal coercive measures.
On Weibo, some netizens questioned: “Another mental illness case?” “If he has mental illness, why wasn’t he confined at home?”
Some netizens raised doubts: “Dealing with it at home is minor, the real question is how did someone with a history of mental illness get a driver’s license and why wasn’t it revoked?”
One netizen posted the “Regulations for the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driver’s License”: Individuals suffering from diseases that impede safe driving, such as mental illness, are not eligible to apply for a driver’s license, and those already obtained should be cancelled in accordance with the law.
