Renowned Chinese actress Liu Xiaoqing, 74, recently took part in the recording of the variety show “Blooming All the Way” and suddenly fell ill, suspected of being poisoned.
In a leaked video, Liu Xiaoqing was seen sitting in a car coughing uncontrollably, and appearing nauseous as if she wanted to vomit. Eventually, she couldn’t hold it back and ended up vomiting. According to Liu Xiaoqing, she may have inhaled renovation dust while waiting for a car in the wind, causing an allergic reaction or poisoning.
According to reports by Chinese media outlet “NetEase,” as the oldest guest on the show, Liu Xiaoqing rested for 20 minutes with medical personnel before returning to the recording. She stated that she did not need special care, as long as she is still alive, there is an opportunity. During the rest period, she experienced dizziness and diarrhea.
The program has not aired yet, but multiple teaser videos showed Liu Xiaoqing looking energetic while walking; during the recording, she even took care of Chen Lan, who is 10 years her junior and uses a wheelchair. A young netizen humorously described Liu Xiaoqing as “full of vigor,” saying, “At over 70 years old, Xiaoqing is like a shot of adrenaline, while I in my 30s feel like I have chicken pox.”
Liu Xiaoqing has always maintained her appearance well, which may be why her age of over 70 is not easily discernible from her outward appearance, leading to speculations of cosmetic procedures. In a previous interview, she denied undergoing plastic surgery, insisting that her features are natural and immutable.
Liu Xiaoqing, often dubbed the “eternal young girl,” finally portrayed a grandmother role in the film “North by North” directed by Feng Xiaogang three years ago, matching her age at the time. She expressed during interviews that the world was surprised to see her in the role of a grandmother, acknowledging that playing an older character was more challenging than younger ones. Her real life story, transitioning from a film diva to a wealthy businesswoman, and her imprisonment for 422 days for confronting Jiang Zemin at Deng Xiaoping’s residence, adds to the appeal of her career.
To outsiders, seeing Liu Xiaoqing play motherly and grandmotherly roles is quite remarkable since she has always been associated with youthfulness, previously portraying mostly young girl roles. As she has aged, netizens have often criticized her for trying to appear youthful, but Liu Xiaoqing remains unapologetically herself, dressing elegantly and refuting criticisms by saying, “Why should I gracefully age to meet everyone’s expectations”, and “Labeling me as the pioneer of trying to look young confines me within age limits.” Her refusal to conform to aging norms and her persistent spirit have earned admiration from many.
