Nanjing Hospital Accused of Providing IVF Services for Single Women, Sparking Public Outrage
A hospital in Nanjing has been exposed for allegedly violating regulations by providing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) services to single women, triggering widespread social controversy. According to investigations, the hospital not only allows customers to choose the educational background, height, and appearance of sperm donors but also agrees on the gender of the baby through contract, with a monthly order volume reaching 30 to 40 cases. The hospital charges around 100,000 RMB per procedure, implicating illegal sperm trade, gender selection, and circumventing reproductive restrictions.
Reported by Da Wan News on May 5th, Nanjing Nantai Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital has been revealed to explicitly offer IVF assistance to single women. Sperm donors, who are 25 years old, can be selected based on their educational background, height, and appearance, and clients can even meet the sperm donors in person to provide samples. Contracts are made to specify the gender of the baby, with the hospital claiming to handle thirty to forty cases per month.
According to information from the Tianyan App, Nanjing Nantai Chinese and Western Medicine Integrated Outpatient Clinic Co., Ltd. was established in April 2023. The legal representative is Zheng Zhongqing, with a registered capital of 1 million RMB. Its business scope includes hospital management, health consulting services (excluding medical treatment), medical research and experimental development, and natural science research and experimental development. The company is jointly owned by Jiangsu Pomegranate Medical Holdings Co., Ltd. and Chen Shi. Intellectual property information shows that the company previously applied to register two “Nantai Songding” trademarks, both of which were rejected.
The incident of the hospital providing IVF services to single women in violation of regulations has drawn attention and discussion among netizens.
A member on Weibo, under the username “ScienceMatters,” stated: “Some women advocate for ‘reproductive rights,’ but the children are deprived of their father’s love as soon as they are born, forced to endure various difficulties of single-parent families – psychological issues, economic pressure, social discrimination, etc. For the sake of ‘independence,’ they forcibly strip the child of the right to enjoy paternal love. If you truly love your child, please give them a complete home first! Also, this kind of thing does not solve the issue of birth rates at all. If the government turns a blind eye to it, it will only lead to more women who do not want to get married.”
Some netizens have also pointed out that this case exposes regulatory blind spots.
On May 5th, a relevant person from the Qinhuai District Health Commission in Nanjing stated that after discovering reports on May 4th that the hospital was suspected of illegally providing assisted reproductive services, the relevant departments in the city immediately established a joint investigation team. They conducted on-site investigations, sealed relevant information, and inspected and seized related medical equipment overnight.
