Ukrainian President Zelensky stated on Tuesday (April 22) that a Chinese citizen was involved in a Russian drone production base. He suggested that Moscow may have “stolen” drone technology from China.
According to Reuters, the Ukrainian leader made these remarks during a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday. A few days ago, he accused China of supplying weapons and ammunition to Russia, marking the first time he directly accused Beijing of providing military aid to Moscow, which China has denied.
Zelensky claimed that Russia may have acquired drone technology from Beijing without the latter’s knowledge. These recent allegations against China by Ukraine have attracted particular attention as the United States-led diplomatic efforts aim to end the sensitive situation of the Russian war in Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Zelensky stated that Russia was recruiting Chinese citizens to join its armed forces through social media, with Beijing officials being aware of this. Kyiv is further evaluating this situation.
China reiterated its “support” for Ukraine’s peace efforts, urging all parties to avoid “irresponsible remarks.”
Zelensky told reporters on Tuesday that he had instructed officials to send information related to the investigation results to Beijing through official channels.
“Additionally, I have requested that Ukraine’s security agency provide more extensive information to the Chinese (Communist Party) regarding Chinese citizens working in drone factories.” He stated that Ukraine believes Russia may have “stolen” this technology by making private agreements with these Chinese citizens.
Neither China nor Russia immediately commented on the matter.
In February 2022, just days before Russian President Putin dispatched tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine, China and Russia announced the establishment of a “strategic partnership of unlimited cooperation.”
