The Hong Kong Forum Los Angeles (HKFLA) has launched a fundraising campaign for the “Hong Kong Land” within the Liberty Sculpture Park in California (Liberty Sculpture Park), hoping to use art to commemorate the indomitable will of the people of Hong Kong.
The Liberty Sculpture Park, located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, has gradually become a tourist destination in California, and is also one of the spiritual landmarks for overseas Chinese supporting democracy. Due to its unique significance, “Hong Kong Land” has become a spiritual haven for overseas Hong Kong people. To enhance this space, HKFLA has initiated a fundraising campaign, hoping that Hong Kong’s stories will attract global attention.
HKFLA spokesperson Mr. Charles Lam stated that the donations will be used to maintain the four exhibits related to Hong Kong within the current sculpture park. Due to the desert climate with cold winters and hot summers, as well as intense sun and sandstorms, the exhibits require regular maintenance to ensure their longevity.
Furthermore, there is currently no explanatory inscription next to the statue of Hong Kong protesters. HKFLA hopes to establish a metal plaque inscribed with descriptions in both Chinese and English to help more people understand the background and significance of the 2019 Hong Kong “anti-extradition bill” protests. Mr. Lam mentioned that during the restoration of the Lennon Wall, members of the Hong Kong Forum often saw local Americans visiting the Liberty Sculpture Park; however, many are not familiar with the events of the 2019 Hong Kong protests. The metal plaque will allow visitors to comprehend the social context and reasons behind the creation.
To vividly depict the current situation in Hong Kong, HKFLA will invite professional artists from Hong Kong to create a large mural showcasing the street scenes of Hong Kong, the faces of protesters, and the vitality of the city on the walls. The founder of the Liberty Sculpture Park, Mr. Wei Ming Chen, has also built a new wall for “Hong Kong Land,” hoping to enrich the park through crowdfunding and continue spreading the story of Hong Kong overseas, collectively safeguarding the memory of Hong Kong.
