In the late years of the Sui Dynasty, when chaos was rampant, the revered Emperor Li Shimin, who later established the era of Zhenguan, was leading troops to pacify all corners. Legend has it that during the battle in Luoyang, he received assistance from the thirteen stick-wielding monks of Shaolin Temple. As a result, the martial monks of Shaolin were granted a special privilege.
