Photo Collection: Summer Milky Way Hunting in Taiwan’s Sanxiantai Capturing Beautiful Scenery

Taiwanese ecologist and photographer Su Chia-hung stated that his son, photographer Su Chien-wei, recently captured a spectacular Milky Way at Sanxiantai in Taitung, Taiwan.

According to Su Chia-hung, many people visit Sanxiantai in Taitung from June to August to capture the beauty of the Milky Way. The waiting time can be quite long, but there is a chance to witness shooting stars streaking across the sky, making the entire Milky Way look exceptionally stunning.

Su Chia-hung mentioned that Su Chien-wei enjoys photographing the Milky Way and usually takes a train to places like Taitung, then rents a scooter to stay in a local homestay near Sanxiantai for easier night sky observation. Since night photography of the Milky Way requires waiting, it is essential to make up for lost sleep the next day if staying up all night.

Su Chien-wei shared that during his recent trip to Taitung for the “Summer Milky Way Hunt,” the Milky Way at Sanxiantai is just as magnificent as the high mountain Milky Way at Hehuan Mountain. The eastern part of Taiwan boasts wide open spaces, clean air, and less light pollution, making it easier to observe the starry sky compared to the western part. He expressed how amazed he was at the beauty and noted that it is definitely worth visiting again if there is the opportunity.

The East Coast National Scenic Area Administration of the Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Republic of China, introduced on its official website that the Sanxiantai Recreation Area in Taitung possesses unique natural landscapes and rich ecological environments on offshore islands. It is not only a must-visit spot for domestic and international tourists exploring the east coast but also the top choice for watching the New Year’s Day sunrise annually.

Located northeast of Chenggong Town in Taitung County, Sanxiantai is comprised of offshore islets and a coral reef coastline. Legend has it that Lu Dongbin, Li Tieguai, and He Xiangu once visited this island, hence its name. The geological formation of Sanxiantai Island belongs to the Duolun Mountain block of rocks. Originally a cape, it gradually eroded by seawater, forming the present offshore island.

Sanxiantai Island covers an area of approximately 22 hectares with the highest point reaching about 77 meters above sea level. The island features a circumferential trail that takes around 2 hours to leisurely stroll. Surrounded by coral reefs, the island showcases natural wonders related to the Sanxiantai legend such as Xianjian Gorge and Huanhuan Cave, as well as various coastal erosion phenomena like sea caves, sea stacks, sea cliffs, enriching the island exploration with a sense of mystery and adventure.
