Chongqing Public Security Bureau Director Suddenly Dies, Officials Claim Natural Causes, Experts Question

Chongqing Official Zhang Anjiang, the Deputy Mayor and Director of the Public Security Bureau, suddenly announced on the evening of May 7th that he had passed away due to a sudden illness, at the age of 55. While the official statement cited a failed rescue attempt, rumors circulated among the public suggesting suicide by jumping off a building, along with talk of a curse over Chongqing. Experts have cast doubt on the official narrative of a death due to illness.

On May 8th, prominent independent commentator Cai Shenkun expressed on the NTD television program “Current Events Perspective” three reasons why the official explanation of Zhang Anjiang’s death may be unreliable:

Firstly, in 2019, when Chongqing Municipal Party Committee Deputy Secretary Ren Xuefeng reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the Jingxi Guesthouse during the CCP Central Committee plenary session in Beijing, the official announcement also attributed it to a failed rescue attempt due to an illness.

Secondly, public rumors not only specified the time and even the 15th floor but also provided more details compared to the vague official account.

Moreover, a series of incidents in Chongqing recently appear to implicate the Public Security Bureau director, suggesting significant implications for him within the ongoing events.

Cai Shenkun concluded that the suicide speculation circulating among the public might be more plausible than the official version. He analyzed potential reasons that may have led to Zhang Anjiang’s suicide from two perspectives:

Firstly, as the Director of the Public Security Bureau, Zhang Anjiang handled various critical departments involving public security, justice, petitions, secrecy, as well as overseeing the municipal supervision committee, courts, procuratorates, Chongqing Armed Police, and border inspections. Being privy to the inner workings of these key sectors could have played a role in a decision to take his own life.

Cai Shenkun further explained the tumultuous events in the Chongqing political scene and highlighted the abnormal occurrences. The position of a Public Security Bureau director becomes crucial when incidents arise, leading to a deep understanding of internal matters. Hence, if the Public Security Bureau director remains unaffected, it would be more surprising.

Secondly, the concept of the Chongqing curse relates to Feng Shui beliefs. Since Chongqing became a direct-controlled municipality, there have been eight Public Security Bureau directors. Prior to Zhang Anjiang, four directors faced removal from office, with some even demoted. Zhang Anjiang’s predecessor, who left his position normally, was the only one since 2009. Cai Shenkun pointed out that the Public Security Bureau director position in Chongqing is considered high-risk, and the notion of a curse around it might have originated from there.

The most famous Public Security Bureau directors in Chongqing were Wang Lijun, the first director of the direct-controlled municipality, and Zhu Mingguo, the second director. Zhu Mingguo previously served as the Political and Legal Affairs Secretary in Hainan and even as a deputy provincial governor, starting as a mere bureau chief in Chongqing without any committee membership.

Cai Shenkun mentioned his personal acquaintance with Zhu Mingguo and recounted his various roles and eventual fate, experiencing a downfall despite a rise in ranks. This narrative aligns with the notion of the Chongqing curse prevailing over individuals connected to the Public Security Bureau director position.

Cai Shenkun emphasized that the behaviors of these officials are often ostentatious, with few effectively fulfilling their duties, suggesting a karmic retribution underlying the so-called curse.
