In Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province, China, a newborn baby had their finger accidentally cut by a nurse while cutting the umbilical cord. This incident quickly became a hot topic on January 6th.
Mr. Sheng, a Chinese netizen, recently shared on social media that during his wife’s caesarean section in a hospital, a midwife accidentally cut off their newborn baby’s finger, causing significant harm to the child right after birth.
According to Mr. Sheng, on December 25, 2025, at around 9:30 a.m., his wife underwent a cesarean section at the People’s Hospital in Xuyi County, Jiangsu Province. “Around 10:30 a.m., the baby was born, and by around 12:00 p.m., a doctor informed me that during the umbilical cord cutting procedure, the midwife accidentally cut off the baby’s finger,” Mr. Sheng said. The midwife later claimed that the incident occurred because the baby’s hand suddenly moved during the process.
Mr. Sheng expressed disbelief at such an incident happening: “In such a large hospital, how could they make such a basic mistake cutting the umbilical cord that it led to cutting a finger?”
After the incident, the child was transferred twice and eventually taken to the Ninth People’s Hospital in Wuxi. The discharge record from the Ninth People’s Hospital in Wuxi indicated that the child was diagnosed with “incomplete severance of the left middle finger.” Following treatment, including finger reattachment surgery, the child’s finger was successfully reattached.
On January 5th, a “Situation Report” released by the Health Commission of Xuyi County, Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province stated: “On December 31st, the patient has been discharged and is currently in the recovery stage. The midwife involved has been suspended from duty. The county hospital has repeatedly apologized to the patient’s family and will take full responsibility for the child’s treatment and recovery.”
Following the release of this information, many netizens expressed sadness over the child’s ordeal, with some criticizing the nurse for being careless and irresponsible in her work, showing a lack of respect for life.
