Sudan Landslide: One survivor among a thousand villagers killed

In Sudan’s western Marra Mountains, a catastrophic landslide has completely destroyed a village, resulting in at least 1,000 deaths with only one survivor.

According to a statement released by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army on Monday (September 1), the disaster occurred on August 31, following days of heavy rainfall in the area.

The affected location is the village of Tirsin in the Amo region of Central Darfur, situated along the Marra Mountains, as reported by the Sudan Liberation Movement. The organization stated in its release that after four days of continuous heavy rain, a landslide occurred, devastating the village.

“Information indicates that the entire village population has perished, with fatalities estimated to exceed one thousand, leaving only one survivor,” the statement read. “The village now lies completely flattened.”

The organization has called on the United Nations, regional bodies, and international humanitarian organizations to assist in the recovery of the bodies of the deceased.

At present, the data provided by the organization has not been independently confirmed.

Many residents sought refuge in the Marra Mountains to escape the intense fighting between the Sudanese government forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Darfur. However, food and medicine supplies in the area have been insufficient.

The civil war, escalated since April 2023, has been ongoing for two years, displacing millions of people and leaving over half of the population facing starvation.

The Marra Mountains have long served as a stronghold for the Sudan Liberation Movement, with the organization engaging in conflict with government forces in Darfur since the early 2000s.
