Taiwanese renowned singer Chyi Chin, who has been working in mainland China in recent years, was recently rumored to be suffering from late-stage lung cancer and undergoing treatment in Beijing. The news has caused a stir. Chyi Chin’s singer sister Chyi Yu and his wife Sun Liya both responded urgently to deny the rumors.
Entertainment blogger “Dong Guagua” on mainland China’s social media platform Weibo claimed on the 23rd that informed sources revealed Chyi Chin had been diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer after multiple examinations. Friends advised him to seek treatment overseas or in Taiwan, but he ultimately chose to stay in Beijing where he has been residing long-term for medical care. It was also disclosed that Chyi Chin has a habit of smoking, drinking, and chewing betel nut. Despite his serious illness, he has not been hospitalized, remains emotionally stable, continues to meet with friends as usual, and is preparing for upcoming performances.
The news of Chyi Chin’s cancer diagnosis has sparked widespread attention. Singer Chyi Yu, who is also currently working in mainland China, responded through her agent regarding the rumors of her younger brother Chyi Chin’s late-stage lung cancer, saying, “I really haven’t heard about it… Where is the source of this information?” She added, “We are with the manager of our little brother. He had a cold before which caused discomfort in his throat. He is currently recovering and still has work arrangements. Thank you for your concern!”
His wife Sun Liya posted on Weibo on the 24th, “Waking up this morning, suddenly hearing such a ridiculous rumor, how come I had no idea that he has late-stage lung cancer? I find it amusing that artists don’t die of illness themselves but are cursed by others. Firstly, my husband is very healthy. Recently, he was only infected with mycoplasma pneumoniae and adenovirus by the children leading to throat ulcers. He has been actively receiving treatment. As for all kinds of cancers, please, please stop cursing. He is doing fine, accompanying the children!”
Chyi Chin, 64 years old this year, exhibited a deteriorated condition during his performance in Suzhou, Jiangsu on November 16. His voice was hoarse and lacked breath, and he coughed several times during the performance, even handing the microphone to the audience for assistance in singing. He had originally planned to participate in a star-studded concert on November 24 but canceled his appearance citing inflamed vocal cords. Chyi Chin is expected to participate in a New Year’s Eve performance on December 31 at the Beijing National Speed Skating Oval, with the official Weibo account confirming his presence at the event.
In his early years, Chyi Chin was one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Taiwan alongside Terry Lin, Jeff Chang, and Wakin Chau, gaining fame with songs like “The Wolf,” “Winter is Around,” “The World Outside,” “Don’t Let My Tears Accompany Me Through the Night,” and “Past in the Wind.” After working in mainland China for many years, he began a relationship with Sun Liya, a singer 24 years his junior from Chengdu, in 2005. The two got married in the United States in 2010 and have a pair of children together.
