Thinking of cultivating your child to become an entrepreneur? Experts offer parents 4 tips.

For many parents, the wish for their children’s future goes beyond just raising them to adulthood; they also hope to nurture them into successful individuals in life, such as entrepreneurs like Bezos or Cuban. Therefore, the saying “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” emphasizes the significance of early education in laying the foundation for their successful lives.

Creating a stress-free environment for children, minimizing household chores to focus more on academics, and aiming for prestigious Ivy League college degrees as a guarantee of future success is a common misconception among parents. It is vital to recognize that success stems from various strategies, starting from childhood education that fosters key qualities crucial for future endeavors.

Writer and parenting expert Margot Machol Bisnow, a mother herself and former member of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Chief of Staff of the President’s Economic Advisory Committee, authored the book “Raising an Entrepreneur: How to Help Your Children Achieve Their Dream.”

Drawing from her own successful parenting experiences and interviews with 70 parents of accomplished individuals, Bisnow concluded that the path to raising children into successful entrepreneurs is identifiable. Here are four essential recommendations she shared in an interview and on CNBC Make It website for every parent to follow.

Cultivating a child’s independence from a young age is not a novel concept, yet for many parents, it might not be an easy task. Guiding children to solve problems themselves, allowing them to face challenges, and developing resilience and independence are key aspects highlighted by Bisnow and the interviewed parents. Overprotective or problem-solving parents risk hindering the child’s growth in confronting and resolving issues independently.

Reality dictates that for successful entrepreneurs, daily life revolves around continuously addressing diverse challenges. Problems arise one after another, demanding adaptability and problem-solving skills essential for future success.

Encouraging children to pursue their interests, identify their talents, and prioritize happiness should be a parent’s focus. Recognizing and applauding their progress and achievements within their chosen path instills confidence and pride, regardless of their ultimate career choice.

Many successful businesses are founded by individuals who abandoned traditional education for a pursuit driven by passion and skills. Academic performance alone does not define success; qualities like independence, responsibility, confidence, resilience, and essential life skills acquired through chores are crucial foundations for future leaders, including CEOs.

Harvard University researchers conducted a study tracking 456 children for over two decades, highlighting that children who enjoy household tasks have better employment rates in adulthood, higher incomes, happier marriages, and lower crime rates, emphasizing the pivotal role of chores in nurturing crucial life attributes.

Parents’ overprotection under the guise of safety can stifle children’s independence, curiosity, and exploration from an early age, potentially compromising their mental well-being. Distinguishing between safe risks and dangerous situations, actively providing opportunities for adventure and exploration, and allowing children to learn from setbacks are essential for their growth.

Bisnow noted from her interviews with parents that witnessing their children taking significant risks to pursue entrepreneurship, sell their companies, change directions, or follow their dreams came as surprises, highlighting the innate parental instinct to caution against uncertainties. Yet, embracing risk, failures, and learning from setbacks are stepping stones toward eventual success, as famously demonstrated by Edison’s invention of the light bulb after numerous failed attempts.

In essence, fostering a holistic approach to parenting that balances independence, resilience, passion, and skills development from an early age lays the groundwork for children to navigate challenges, pursue their dreams, and ultimately achieve success in their chosen paths.
