During the “National Day” holiday, severe convective weather has been reported in several regions of mainland China. Nine provinces and municipalities experienced heavy to torrential rains, with parts of the Jiangnan and Jianghuai regions facing thunderstorms with wind speeds exceeding level 8. On October 2nd, Typhoon “Medmim” was formed, bringing inconvenience to travelers.
The China Meteorological Administration issued blue alerts for heavy rain, strong convective weather, and strong winds on October 2nd at 6 a.m.
At 10 a.m. on October 2nd, the China Meteorological Administration continued to issue three simultaneous warnings. A blue alert for heavy rain was issued: From 2 p.m. on the 2nd to 2 p.m. on the 3rd, parts of eastern and southern Jiangsu, Shanghai, northern Zhejiang, southern Henan, western Anhui, northern and western Hubei, southeastern Shaanxi, northeastern Sichuan, and northern Chongqing are expected to experience heavy to torrential rains. Some areas in northern Jiangsu may even experience severe thunderstorms with strong winds.
At 10 a.m. on the 2nd, the China Meteorological Administration continued to issue a blue alert for strong convective weather: From 2 p.m. on the 2nd to 2 p.m. on the 3rd, parts of eastern Jianghuai, northeastern Jiangnan, will experience thunderstorms with wind speeds of level 8 or above, and possibly hail. In certain areas of southern and northern Jiangsu, as well as northern and western Shanghai and northern Zhejiang, wind speeds may reach level 10 or higher, with maximum wind speeds exceeding level 11. Some areas may see hourly rainfall of over 50 millimeters, with potential for over 60 millimeters. It is expected that severe convective weather will persist into the afternoon and evening of the 2nd.
At 6 a.m. on October 2nd, the China Meteorological Administration issued a blue alert for strong winds: From 8 a.m. on the 2nd to 8 a.m. on the 3rd, parts of northern and eastern Xinjiang, western Gansu, western and northeastern Inner Mongolia will experience winds of level 5-6. In the mountainous areas of Xinjiang, wind speeds may reach level 7-8, with gusts of level 9-11. The central and southern Yellow Sea will experience strong winds of level 7-8, with gusts of 9-10, and some areas may experience winds of level 9 with gusts up to 10-11. The southeastern part of the Bashi Channel will experience winds of level 7, with gusts of level 8.
From 8 a.m. on October 3rd to 8 a.m. on the 4th, parts of eastern Xinjiang, southern Xinjiang Basin, western Gansu, western and northern Inner Mongolia will experience winds of level 5-6, with mountainous areas of Xinjiang seeing wind speeds of level 7-8. The southeastern part of the Yellow Sea will experience strong winds of level 7-8, with gusts of level 9-10. The Bashi Channel, northeastern South China Sea, and central to eastern South China Sea will experience winds of level 8-10, with gusts of level 11-12.
From October 3rd to 4th, while rainfall in regions like Huang-Huai may see some weakening, northeastern Sichuan and southern parts of Shaanxi may still experience heavy to torrential rains, with the possibility of severe downpours in some areas.
Additionally, Typhoon “Medmim,” the 21st typhoon of the year, was formed at 8 a.m. on the 2nd. Its center was located approximately 680 kilometers east of Manila, Philippines, in the open ocean, with maximum wind speeds near the center reaching level 8 (18 meters/second). It is projected that on the night of the 3rd to the early morning of the 4th, “Medmim” will enter the eastern part of the South China Sea and subsequently approach the coastal areas from western Guangdong to the eastern part of Hainan Island in China.
