On September 26th, the “Pregnant Woman Cliff Incident in Thailand” involving Wang Nuannuan (alias) and her husband Yu Modong’s divorce case was heard in the Qinhuai District Court of Nanjing City. Yu Modong, who is serving a sentence in Thailand, appeared in court via video. Wang Nuannuan had previously stated that her only demand was to successfully divorce.
According to reports from “Urban Scene” and “Focus News,” early in the morning on the 26th, Wang Nuannuan and her lawyer arrived near the courthouse to await the trial.
Wang Nuannuan mentioned that she had not slept well the night before and was feeling anxious, unsure of what Yu Modong would say in court. She stated that she would try to control her emotions as much as possible, expressing, “Only through a complete divorce can I have a new beginning and truly be free.”
She revealed that the husband’s family had been adamant in not hiring a lawyer, so she had to resort to serving the divorce papers overseas. After nearly three years of navigating the overseas serving procedure, just four days before the trial, the husband’s family suddenly changed their stance, claiming to have a lawyer. Additionally, Yu Modong had demanded a divorce fee of 30 million. Wang Nuannuan previously disclosed to “Kandu News” that Yu Modong had a serious gambling addiction, with debts totaling over 5 million RMB.
“They have been tormenting me, asking for money to let me buy my freedom,” she said.
On June 9, 2019, while five months pregnant, Wang Nuannuan and her husband Yu Modong were traveling in Thailand when he pushed her off a 34-meter cliff. Fortunately, she was caught by a large tree during the fall, miraculously surviving but sustaining 17 fractures throughout her body.
Wang Nuannuan believed that Yu Modong pushed her off the cliff primarily to inherit her property. Before pushing her, Yu Modong hugged her, touched her pregnant belly, kissed her face, and then firmly and clearly said, “Go and die.” After pushing her, Yu Modong hid in the crowd at the incident site, where locals witnessed him looking “panicked,” ultimately becoming crucial evidence in the case.
In June 2023, the case was ruled by the Supreme Court of Thailand, sentencing Yu Modong to 33 years and 4 months in prison for attempted murder and ordering him to pay civil compensation of 5.2 million Thai baht (approximately 1.06 million RMB).
Following the verdict, Wang Nuannuan filed for divorce in the Qinhuai District Court of Nanjing in September 2023. However, six years had passed, and Wang Nuannuan hadn’t received a single cent, nor had the divorce been finalized.
According to Wang Nuannuan’s lawyer, as Yu Modong was serving his sentence abroad, there was no legal precedent for the proceedings. Thai prisons couldn’t bring Yu Modong back for the trial, and Chinese judges couldn’t go to Thailand for the hearing. It was only through negotiations between the two countries that this problem was finally resolved.
Now that the divorce case has finally been heard, Wang Nuannuan stated that this marriage, which existed in name only, had profoundly affected her normal life. Her demand was a smooth divorce and for the other party to leave with nothing.
After a four-hour trial, Wang Nuannuan revealed that the trial went smoother than expected, and the entire trial phase had concluded. However, the divorce case still lacked a definitive outcome, with the court scheduling a later date for the verdict.
