Typhoon Yangliu formed, will affect Taiwan starting from the 13th.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau announced the formation of a mild typhoon named Yangliu at 2 a.m. today (8th). Meteorological experts pointed out that starting from the 13th, Typhoon Yangliu will begin to affect Taiwan. Due to ongoing adjustments in various global models, continuous observation is necessary.

The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan stated that as of 8 a.m. today, the center of Typhoon Yangliu was located at 20.0 degrees north latitude, 145.7 degrees east longitude, moving in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. The central pressure was 998 hPa, with a maximum wind speed near the center of 20 meters per second and maximum gusts of 28 meters per second. The radius of strong winds averaged 80 kilometers (60 kilometers on the northwest side, 60 kilometers on the northeast side, 100 kilometers on the southwest side, and 100 kilometers on the southeast side).

Assistant Professor Wu Derong from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Taiwan Central University mentioned on a weather forecast program that the latest simulation from the European Model (ECMWF) at 8 p.m. on the 7th showed that today and the 9th will be influenced by a Pacific high-pressure system. It will be a sunny and hot “peak summer” period in various regions, with strong UV rays, so sun protection and heatstroke prevention are advised. There is a chance of brief afternoon showers in mountainous areas.

Wu Derong further explained that according to the latest European model simulation, from the 10th to the 12th, it will remain sunny and hot in various regions, with a need for sun protection and heatstroke prevention. There might be an increase in moisture in the south and atmospheric instability, leading to a probability of localized showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon in mountainous areas, which might extend to some flatlands. The weather on the 13th and 14th in various regions will depend on the intensity and trajectory of Typhoon Yangliu, which is uncertain and requires further observation.

He added that a tropical low pressure system north of Guam in the early hours of today has developed into a light typhoon named Yangliu. The latest European model ensemble simulation average suggests that from the 13th to the 14th, it will pass through the southern tip of Taiwan, with individual simulated paths scattered on both sides. Some simulations show continuous strengthening, while others suggest a mid-way weakening or dissipation.

Regarding the latest U.S. model (GEFS) ensemble simulation average, it slightly leans north in its path passing through Taiwan. Individual simulated paths and intensities also exhibit significant uncertainty. With continuous adjustments in various global models, ongoing observation is deemed necessary.
