On June 6, 2026, Grace Liao, a well-known Taiwanese TV host and social media personality, visited New York City to engage in a discussion with nearly a hundred members of the “Taiwanese Pen Club in the Greater New York Area.” The meeting focused on her recently released documentary series, “Resilient Island: A Documentary on Taiwan,” which took her several years to produce. The content of the documentary includes reflections on the Hong Kong anti-extradition movement and the increasing infiltration and aggression of the Chinese Communist Party towards Taiwan.
After the discussion, Grace Liao told Epoch Times that, as she mentioned in one of the videos of the documentary series, while it may appear to be a story about the Hong Kong protests, it is ultimately about the “fate that Taiwanese still have time to listen to.”
Grace Liao is a Taiwanese journalist, news anchor, host, producer, and writer. She was born in Xiluo Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan, and graduated from Fu Jen Catholic University with a degree in Mass Communication and holds an EMBA from National Taiwan University in Information Management. She was a long-time host of the political commentary program “New Taiwan, Keep Going” on SET News, and after the show ended, she launched her own YouTube channel, “Grace Liao Taiwan PLUS.”
According to the introduction on Grace Liao’s YouTube channel, “Resilient Island: A Documentary on Taiwan” is a deep documentary series produced by herself in collaboration with several emerging directors, totaling six episodes. It premiered on FTV News in March 2026. The documentary aims to explore the civic power and social foundation demonstrated by Taiwan when facing natural disasters and changes in political and economic situations.
During the meeting on June 6, Grace Liao screened the second episode of this documentary series titled “Chronicles of a City Under Siege.” The film documents the stories of many Hong Kong residents who fled to Taiwan with tears and a sense of displacement after the 2019 anti-extradition movement in Hong Kong. It includes a significant amount of historical footage from the anti-extradition movement, including scenes of Jimmy Lai, the owner of Apple Daily in Hong Kong, being arrested by the Hong Kong police under Chinese Communist rule. In the film, Grace Liao issued a warning, stating that if Taiwan underestimates the infiltration of the Chinese Communist Party, it may suffer the same fate as Hong Kong. She emphasized, “This is not just the story of Hong Kong people; this is the fate that Taiwan still has time to change.”
“As China (CCP) gradually annexed Hong Kong, the current situation in Taiwan bears many similarities,” Grace Liao told Epoch Times after the meeting. “Even more shameful is that through various military and multi-layered infiltrations into Taiwan, many individuals in Taiwan have blatantly become agents of China (CCP), and this is a fact. Therefore, as a media person facing this situation, one must play their role effectively. Otherwise, once the Communist Party invades Taiwan, we will surely meet the same fate as Jimmy Lai – our homes will be raided, our families eradicated, we’ll be arrested and detained.”
The meeting of Grace Liao with the Pen Club coincided with the visit of the pro-China current chairperson of the Taiwan Kuomintang, Bi-khim Hsiao, to New York the day before. Confronted with the blatant ambitions of China towards Taiwan, Grace Liao questioned these pro-China Taiwanese individuals, asking, “Have you really lived in China?” She believes that the fate of Taiwan should be determined by the people of Taiwan themselves.
The current president of the Taiwanese Pen Club, Meng-sung Chen, stated that Grace Liao recently received the annual award from the New York Taiwan Medical Association because the members of the Pen Club greatly admire her and agree with her views, which is why she was invited to share her thoughts this time. He pointed out, “Look at the turnout, so many people are here this time.”
The founder and former president of the Pen Club, Rong-tsong Tsai, told Epoch Times that as a doctor, he had twice traveled to the frontlines of Ukraine to support the Ukrainian people because he believes that the situations in Ukraine and Taiwan are very similar, and the resilient resistance of the Ukrainian people against Russian invasion has inspired the people of Taiwan.
“Our most important task is to turn ourselves into ‘hedgehogs,’ who no one dares to provoke in the forest,” Tsai said. “This means arming ourselves psychologically, technologically, and with weapons.”
