Local residents reported feeling the quake as a 5.4 magnitude, stronger than the earthquake that occurred in the early morning. People in Guangdong also felt the tremor significantly, while residents in Guizhou and Sichuan reported experiencing the earthquake. Earlier on the same day, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit Liunan District, resulting in 3 deaths, 4 injuries, and damage to 58 houses (statistics incomplete).
China Earthquake Networks Center officially confirmed that on May 18th at 21:44 in Liunan District, Liuzhou City, Guangxi (latitude 24.37 degrees, longitude 109.26 degrees), a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred with a depth of 8 kilometers.
In the early morning of May 19th Beijing time, local residents shared their experiences on Weibo, mentioning that the tremor was stronger than the one in the early morning. Comments such as “5.4 magnitude, bigger than the morning one,” “Here reporting 5.4 magnitude,” and “Why is today’s 5.2 much stronger than yesterday’s 5.2? The shaking in Yulin tonight was much more noticeable, especially worrying for Liuzhou,” were widely shared. People from different provinces also reported feeling the quake, with individuals from Guizhou mentioning, “We felt it in Guizhou!” and those from Yibin saying, “It’s shaking here, not sure if it’s from Guangxi.”
Residents in Guangdong also felt the tremor, with reports coming in from Dongguan, Zhanjiang, Foshan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and more cities. Comments like “Dongguan felt it distinctly,” “Zhanjiang felt it,” and “Shenzhen also has a strong tremor! Much stronger than the morning one!” flooded social media platforms. The topics tagged as “Guangzhou tremor” and “Shenzhen tremor” quickly became trending on Weibo.
Earlier, on the 18th at 0:21, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Liunan District, Liuzhou City, Guangxi (latitude 24.38 degrees, longitude 109.26 degrees), with a depth of 8 kilometers. Cities like Liuzhou, Laibing, Guigang, Nanning, Baise, Guilin, Laibing, Hezhou, Hechi, and Wuzhou all felt the tremor. Around this time, a total of 5 earthquakes ranging from 2.2 to 3.2 magnitudes were recorded.
In the afternoon of the 18th, reporters from Jiemu News visited Taoyang Village in Liunan District and witnessed partial collapses in some residential buildings along the street. The exposed steel reinforcement in the unaffected areas and the dangling doors of the second and third floors posed a dangerous situation. Some houses had windows shattered and glass littered the ground on the third and fourth floors.
According to incomplete statistics, a total of 58 houses were damaged to varying degrees by the earthquake, and there were 10 reports of secondary geological disasters, including rockfalls triggered by the quake. This resulted in the complete closure of the passage from kilometer 112+750 to kilometer 112+800 on the Liuzhou Ring Expressway S3101 due to falling rocks. Over 7000 people have been urgently relocated as a result.
