On Labor Day, most grocery chain stores across the United States will remain open for business as it is a federal holiday. Companies like Walmart and Kroger will continue operations on Monday, Labor Day (September 2), while Costco and some other companies will be closed to observe the holiday.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, this federal holiday is meant to celebrate the “social and economic achievements of American workers,” originating from the late 19th century. President Grover Cleveland signed into law on June 28, 1894, designating the first Monday of September each year as Labor Day.
From grocery stores to home improvement retailers, some retailers will close to give their employees a day off, while others may reduce their operating hours.
However, banks, post offices, and shipping stores operate differently as most of these services will be closed on Labor Day.
Stores like Aldi will have shortened hours, typically from 9 AM to 6 PM; CVS, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Food Lion, Giant Eagle, Harris Teeter, and Hobby Lobby are among the stores that may have adjusted hours on Labor Day.
Stores like Home Depot, HomeGoods, Jewel-Osco, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s, Mariano’s, Marshalls, Meijer, Menards, Michael’s, Petco, Petsmart, Publix, Ross, Sam’s Club, Starbucks, Target, TJ Maxx, Trader Joe’s, Tony’s Fresh Market, Walgreen’s, Walmart, Wegmans, Winn-Dixie, and Whole Foods may have varying operating hours on Labor Day. It is suggested to check with your local store for specific details.
However, Costco will be closed on Labor Day.
Labor Day is one of the 11 holidays celebrated by the United States Postal Service, meaning all post offices will be closed on the next Monday, and mail delivery will not take place.
FedEx and UPS do not offer pickup or delivery services on Labor Day. Some FedEx locations may have adjusted hours on the holiday, so it is advised to inquire at your local FedEx office for specific information.
Some UPS stores may be closed, while others might be open with adjusted hours. It is recommended to check with your local UPS store for information on operating hours.
Banks typically do not operate on federal holidays, including Labor Day. Certain bank services, such as ATMs, may continue to be available for customers who need to withdraw or deposit cash.
