Number of undocumented immigrants arriving in New York City in July averages less than a thousand per week.

According to data from the office of New York City Mayor Adams, the number of undocumented immigrants arriving in New York City by bus from the U.S. southwest border in July averaged below 1,000 per week, marking a new low since October 2022.

In the first week of July, slightly over 900 undocumented immigrants were recorded, followed by around 800 per week in the subsequent weeks, a significant decrease from the thousands arriving the previous week. Deputy Mayor Williams-Esom attributed this change to new restrictions by the Biden administration at the U.S.-Mexico border and the mayor’s lawsuit against a Texas bus company transporting immigrants.

Mayor Adams issued an executive order in December requiring bus companies to provide notice 32 hours before arriving in New York City and limiting the times buses can arrive. In January, he also filed lawsuits against 17 Texas charter bus companies. Although the state Supreme Court judge recently dismissed the lawsuits, many companies have ceased transporting immigrants to New York City.

City government data shows that there are 65,000 undocumented immigrants housed in shelters in New York City.
