Experts: Storing lettuce like this can keep it fresh for 3 weeks.

During the hot summer, people tend to lose their appetite due to the high temperatures. In such times, switching to cold salads could be a good choice to refresh one’s palate, with fresh lettuce being one of the excellent ingredients for making salads. Recently, experts shared a method for preserving lettuce that can keep them fresh for up to 3 weeks, eliminating concerns about them spoiling before being consumed.

According to a report from the UK’s “Daily Express,” if you always struggle to finish your lettuce before it goes bad, sustainable living expert Wendy Graham shared a plastic-free storage method on her blog that can extend the freshness of lettuce for three weeks, which might be worth considering.

Graham explained that there are primarily three verified methods for extending the freshness of lettuce, but only one can maintain the crisp texture of lettuce for 3 weeks. The steps include removing the slippery outer leaves of the lettuce, thoroughly washing the remaining leaves, and then using a salad spinner or kitchen towel to dry out the excess moisture from the leaves.

Subsequently, the leaves are laid out on a clean and dry kitchen towel, rolled up carefully (like a Swiss roll), and stored in the bottom drawer of the refrigerator. Graham noted that the kitchen towel method is effective as it helps absorb excess moisture, allowing the lettuce to stay fresh longer, approximately for a week.

Another method involves storing the lettuce leaves in a clean, dry, and covered large glass jar or container. The wilted or damaged leaves should be discarded, and the remaining ones washed, dried thoroughly, and cut or torn into preferred sizes before being stored in the jar and refrigerated with the lid closed tightly.

Graham highlighted that keeping the lettuce leaves in a sealed glass jar maintains a stable humidity environment and protects the leaves, ensuring they remain crisp. This method can preserve lettuce for about a week inside the jar.

To extend the freshness of lettuce, you can also place the entire head of lettuce in a cup or bowl filled with water. Simply cut a small portion of the lettuce’s root, place it in the water-filled container (cut side facing down), and remove it when ready to use.

Graham suggested that this method not only keeps the lettuce fresh but also allows it to continue growing. Depending on the variety of lettuce and its initial freshness, lettuce can be preserved for one to three weeks using this method, either in the fridge or on the counter. Ensure to change the water once it becomes murky or add more water as needed.

In addition, American food storage expert, writer, and founder of The Cross Legacy website, Amy Cross, previously introduced a method of soaking lettuce in a mixture of water and white vinegar, washing and drying it, and then storing it in a glass container.

According to Cross, based on her experiments, vegetables stored in glass containers using this method can last an average of 6 weeks.
