Over 1,500 Dozen Eggs Recalled in Northern California Due to Salmonella Contamination

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a warning regarding Vega Farms, a family-owned farm in Dixon, Northern California. The farm is voluntarily recalling over 1,500 dozens of eggs due to potential contamination of Salmonella bacteria in their processing equipment.

So far, no related illness reports have been reported, but health officials are urging consumers who have purchased eggs from the specific batch to immediately discard or return the products.

According to CDPH, the recall applies to 12-pack cartons with a processing code of “2136” and a sell-by date of December 22 or earlier, as well as 30-pack tray eggs.

A spokesperson for Vega Farms emphasized that the source of contamination is the processing equipment, not the farm’s chicken flocks, and noted that this is the first significant recall event in the farm’s 40-year history.

These eggs have been distributed to restaurants, farmer’s markets, and retail stores in locations such as Sacramento and Davis. Vega Farms stated that they have removed all affected products from these locations.

While no infection cases have been reported yet, health officials warn that Salmonella infection may cause symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Vulnerable populations such as infants, elderly individuals, those with weakened immune systems, and some chronic disease patients are at higher risk.

Salmonella bacteria in the intestinal tract can damage the intestinal walls, making it difficult for the body to absorb water, potentially leading to rapid dehydration in patients.

Consumers who have purchased eggs with the mentioned codes and dates are advised to either dispose of them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a refund. For more information, individuals can contact Vega Farms or visit CDPH’s food recall website.

It is worth noting that this is not the only food recall event in recent times. Earlier this month, grocery store chain Wegmans also recalled two mixed nut products due to potential Salmonella contamination risks.
