The Philippine Armed Forces stated on Thursday, June 5th, that the Philippines and US military conducted the 7th joint maritime exercise in the waters off Occidental Mindoro and Zambales provinces in the Philippines.
According to the Philippine Armed Forces, this marks the 7th joint sailing in the South China Sea between the Philippines and the US military, aimed at enhancing their collaborative combat capabilities.
The exercise, conducted in waters near Occidental Mindoro and Zambales provinces on Wednesday, stayed away from disputed islands and reefs. It included nearshore joint operations and firepower support.
In a statement, the Philippine Armed Forces expressed that the Maritime Cooperation Activity (MCA) is intended to demonstrate the determination to deepen cooperation and enhance collaborative combat capabilities, all in accordance with international law.
The joint sailing exercise also showcased the “Miguel Malvar” missile frigate of the Philippines, a 118-meter-long vessel that has been in service since last month.
The vessel is one of the two light frigates constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, marking a new phase in the Philippines’ military modernization plan.
Under the leadership of current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., it’s evident that the relationship between the Philippines and Washington has become stronger, with increased military engagements between these two treaty allies.
This move indicates President Marcos Jr.’s shift towards a closer alignment with Washington in response to China’s expanding presence in the South China Sea.
China claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, including parts of the exclusive economic zones of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
