Trump nominates former congressman Collins as Secretary of Veterans Affairs

On November 15, 2024, US President-elect Donald Trump (Trump) announced on Thursday, November 14 that he would nominate former Georgia Congressman Doug Collins to be the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Trump wrote on his social media platform “Truth Social”: “Doug himself is a veteran, currently serving as a chaplain in the US Air Force Reserve Command and has fought for our country during the Iraq War.”

“We must take care of our brave men and women in the military. Doug will be a great advocate for our active-duty military, veterans, and military families, ensuring they receive the support they need,” continued Trump. “Doug, thank you for being willing to serve our country in this very important position.”

Shortly after Trump announced this news, Collins posted on the social media platform X, saying he was “honored” to accept the nomination.

He stated: “Our heroes deserve the best care and support. We will work tirelessly to streamline and reduce regulations at the Department of Veterans Affairs, root out corruption, and ensure that every veteran receives the benefits they deserve.”

“We will work together to make the Department of Veterans Affairs serve those who have fought for us,” he added. “It is time to provide our veterans with world-class care that they deserve.”

Collins, 58, is a professional lawyer and served as a congressman from 2013 to 2021. He is a staunch supporter of Trump and was one of the former President’s primary defenders in the House of Representatives during the first impeachment inquiry in 2019. Since leaving Washington, D.C. in 2021, he has been serving as Trump’s legal advisor.

The position of Secretary of Veterans Affairs is a cabinet position, therefore it requires confirmation from the Senate.
