Epoch of Mark: Korea to Aid Ukraine in Resistance Against North Korean Invasion

Recently, there have been frequent movements from North Korea that have caught everyone’s attention. Not only have they destroyed the roads and railways connecting to South Korea, but it has been discovered that they have also sent elite special forces to Russia. The deep ties between North Korea and Russia could significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Russian military on one hand, while on the other hand, it could potentially prompt South Korea to directly provide lethal weapons to Ukraine. There are even reports suggesting that South Korea may send advisors to Ukraine to assist in interrogating North Korean prisoners or defectors.

In the recent Russia-Ukraine front, there hasn’t been much change despite the ongoing offensives by Russian forces in multiple regions. However, following the capture of Vuhledar, Russian forces seem to have refrained from launching large-scale offensives in new areas.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believes that the arrival of the rainy season has made the ground muddier, which might favor the Russian military in terms of consolidating their positions and preparing for future offensives over the next few months.

It is expected that North Korea will deploy its elite special forces 11th Corps, also known as the Storm Corps, consisting of more than 12,000 troops, to the Russia-Ukraine conflict zone. The first batch of 1,500 North Korean special forces have already been stationed at Russian military bases located in Vladivostok, Ussuriysk, Khabarovsk, Blagoveshchensk, among others. After completing their adaptation training, they are set to join the front line in Kursk. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has revealed that North Korean soldiers have been issued Russian military uniforms and weapons, as well as fake identity cards resembling the appearance of Siberian Yakut and Buryat people. The disguise as Russian troops is aimed at concealing the involvement of North Korean forces in combat.

Since August last year, North Korea has transported over 13,000 shipping containers to Russia, providing ammunition, missiles, anti-tank rockets, and other lethal weapons. Additionally, Kim Jong-chik, the Deputy Minister of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers’ Party overseeing North Korea’s missile development, has been found by the National Intelligence Service to have visited the vicinity of the Russia-Ukraine front multiple times to inspect the KN-23 missile launch site.

South Korean media has also reported that after North Korea dispatched troops to support Russian operations, South Korea may send military and intelligence personnel to Ukraine, including intelligence officers specialized in North Korea and tactical experts. In the event that North Korean soldiers are captured by Ukrainian forces, the South Korean military intelligence personnel in Ukraine will assist in providing interrogation or translation services, as well as sharing relevant information on North Korean military tactics and operations with Ukraine.
