During the recent United Nations General Assembly, President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky had a meeting, which left Zelensky very happy. It can be inferred that the results of this meeting were quite good. During a subsequent press conference, Trump mentioned that they greatly respect Ukraine’s brave fighting. The biggest development so far is that Russia’s economy has become very poor, collapsing under the pressure, while Ukraine has been doing a very courageous job. This war should end within three days. It seems that things are not looking good for the Russians, having taken three and a half years to reach this point, and they don’t seem to be doing well.
Later, Trump tweeted several key points: firstly, Russia is a paper tiger, having taken three and a half years to reach this stage. At the same time, Trump stated that the Russian economy is now very poor, with many people struggling to afford even oil. Ukraine will regain all lost territories, and Russia and Putin are now facing a major economic crisis. It is now Ukraine’s time to act.
Trump’s speech was a 180-degree turn compared to before. Why such a drastic change in attitude?
After half a year, Trump finally realized that the true issue of the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire does not lie with Ukraine, but with Putin and Russia. As the initiator of the war, Putin does not want a ceasefire, making it impossible to reach an agreement.
A simple example is the so-called ceasefire in the air, which should have been the easiest to achieve and beneficial for Russia. However, currently, Russia frequently sends out hundreds of drones to attack civilian facilities in Ukrainian cities like Kiev, Lviv, and Odessa. These attacks target civilian infrastructure such as power plants, schools, hospitals, and even shopping centers.
Though there are many defending Russia online, the indefensible and unforgivable act of Russia bombing civilian facilities is clear. If, as Putin claims, Russia’s goal is only to protect ethnic Russians inside Ukraine and to reclaim the eastern regions, attacking civilians will not help in the Donbas conflict. Russia has been bombing Ukraine for a while now. Has there been any change at the battlefront in Donetsk?
Furthermore, many cities being bombarded are in eastern Ukraine. For instance, Odessa used to have a significant Russian-speaking population; hence, bombing Odessa is essentially bombing their own people.
From these simple facts, it can be deduced that the so-called protection of ethnic Russians is just a lie from Putin. His reluctance to agree to an air ceasefire and stop bombing Ukraine indicates that Putin has never truly intended to cease fire.
It can be said that Trump’s foreign policy over the past six months has been wrong, and he has finally realized that his previous judgments were incorrect. From now on, increasing economic sanctions on Russia and providing more military assistance are essential to achieving peace in the end.
In recent days, there have been some changes on the battlefield in Ukraine. Videos have surfaced, filmed by the Ukrainian 10th Army’s drone unit, tracking Russian movements both day and night, using drones and long-range artillery to eliminate Russian soldiers.
Another video released by the Ukrainian 63rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade shows Ukraine actively using drones to scout and attack Russian hiding places on the battlefield. Several Russian tanks, camouflaged with iron cages, are discovered and destroyed by drones. These tanks were hidden in bunkers to evade drone attacks and increase camouflage, yet they were eventually completely destroyed, engulfing in flames.
Additionally, another video airing shows Ukrainian drones continually attacking Crimea. The video, released on September 25, displays the destruction of various radars and large transport planes like the AN-26. The AN-26, developed by Antonov Design Bureau during the Cold War in Kiev, was widely used in the current Ukraine conflict.
Apart from this, Ukraine’s Air Force is still fighting against Russian drones in the sky. In an official video, the Ukrainian Air Force showcases the destruction of multiple Russian drones, including six super drones, one Lightning drone, and a Merlin drone.
Furthermore, Ukraine continues the intense ground battle against Russia. Footage from the city of Kostiantynivka, southwest of Bakhmut, depicts the devastation of a once populous city, now destroyed by war. Despite being under constant fire from Russia, the city still remains in Ukrainian hands.
Recently, Reuters reported that Chinese engineers have assisted Russia in establishing a drone production base. Chinese engineers have been aiding the Kolchuga Factory in Russia to set up a drone production base since 2023, producing attack and reconnaissance drones. Despite these reports, Chinese officials deny providing lethal weapons to either side of the conflict and strictly regulate the export of dual-use materials, including drones.
Russia had attempted a summer offensive this year, but it has so far been unsuccessful. However, this does not mean Ukraine has the upper hand in the battlefield. Ukraine faces its own challenges such as shortages in ammunition, lack of anti-aircraft firepower, difficulties intercepting Russian drones in large numbers, and personnel issues.
The recent shift in stance by US President Trump is good news for Ukraine, but action to provide more weapons to Ukraine and increase economic aid is crucial to swiftly end this war.
