Former chairman of China Tower Corporation, Tong Jilu, was reported missing for several months. On September 21, the website of the CCP Commission for Discipline Inspection announced that Tong Jilu is under investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline and law.
Tong Jilu, 67, originally worked in Liaoning and served as the Deputy Director of the Provincial Post Bureau. In July 2000, he joined China Unicom and held positions as Chief Accountant and Deputy General Manager. He personally experienced the restructuring, listing, and restructuring of China Unicom.
China Tower is a large state-owned communication infrastructure service company jointly funded by China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. It was established on July 18, 2014, with Tong Jilu appointed as General Manager in August of the same year. In March 2018, he took over as Chairman, and the company successfully went public on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on August 8 of the same year. Tong Jilu stepped down as Chairman in September 2021 after over 7 years at China Tower. He had also served as a delegate to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
According to reports from mainland Chinese media, Tong Jilu, who had been retired for nearly 4 years, has been out of contact since late May this year. It is alleged that his disappearance was linked to the investigation of executives at related financial institutions.
During Tong Jilu’s disappearance, his wife and son were also reported missing around the time of the Dragon Boat Festival this year. His wife used to work at Beijing Unicom, while his son was employed at the top brokerage firm, China International Capital Corporation, overseeing a specific project.
It is claimed that due to this situation, former senior executives at China International Capital Corporation, such as Ding Wei, former Chairman of CICC, and several key business figures, have also gone missing. Reportedly, Ding Wei was taken away by the discipline inspection department in early July 2025.
Former Beijing lawyer and Chairman of the Canadian Alliance, Lai Jianping, stated in a previous interview with Epoch Times that “Officials of the CCP, the main power holders of state-owned enterprises, regardless of who they are, none of their hands are clean, they all have a record of corruption, illegal activities, and violations of discipline, so basically, one by one, they are being targeted.”
