Sinkhole on Shenzhen Bay Boulevard Causes Massive Traffic Jam

On the morning of October 12, a sudden road collapse occurred on the Binhai Avenue in Shenzhen, with a collapsed area of about 50 square meters and a depth of about 2 meters, leading to a major traffic jam.

During the morning rush hour on October 12, a section of Binhai Avenue in Shenzhen experienced a collapse, specifically located on the south side of the Happy Coast of Overseas Chinese City. Many netizens on social media platforms reported that Binhai Avenue was heavily congested as early as 8 a.m., with only two lanes available for traffic on the main road.

According to a report by Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, at around 7:30 a.m. on October 12, a partial collapse occurred on Binhai Avenue from east to west near the Shenzhen Bay Sea Rhyme Park (with an area of about 50 square meters and a depth of about 2 meters), with no casualties or vehicle damage reported at the scene, and surrounding buildings were unaffected.

The report stated that Binhai Avenue was closed in the west-to-east direction with four lanes, and Baidu Maps showed a traffic jam of 3.6 kilometers in that direction, which was expected to ease after 12:30. By 12:30 noon, the filling work in the collapse area was completed, and it was anticipated that traffic would resume later in the evening.

The Safety Director of Shenzhen Metro Group Co., Ltd. told Economic Daily News that the collapsed area was a shield construction section buried 40 meters deep, located closer to the sea and also serving as a backfill area, with relatively complex geological conditions.

Data shows that Binhai Avenue is an important part of Shenzhen’s main road network.

The collapse area is located on Binhai Avenue (Headquarters Base section), which extends from Shahe East Road Interchange in the west to the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway in the east, spanning the Nanshan and Futian districts with a total length of 5950 meters. In May of this year, the traffic comprehensive renovation project of Binhai Avenue (Headquarters Base section) saw the completion of the main body structure of the submerged tunnel section. After the renovation, the main line will be an eight-lane bidirectional road with a speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and the auxiliary lane will be a six-lane bidirectional road with a speed of 40 kilometers per hour.
