During the May Day holiday, a series of tragic incidents occurred in mainland China. Following the shocking incident of a sedan ramming into a crowd in Chengdu on May 1st, another sedan ramming incident took place in Linqu Village, Kunyang Town, Lin District, Pingyang County, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. Additionally, a homicide took place in the Junling Residential Area in the urban area of Liuzhou City, Guangxi, resulting in over twenty casualties.
On the morning of May 3rd, a tragic incident of a sedan ramming into a crowd unfolded at a market in Linqu Village, Kunyang Town, Lin District, Pingyang County, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. Witnesses described the scene as horrific, with the sedan driver in his fifties deliberately striking multiple people, resulting in several fatalities and injuries.
Local resident Xiaojia anonymously disclosed to reporters that the driver, around 50 years old, recklessly drove through the market area, causing chaos and tragedy by reportedly running over five people due to an alleged dispute over payment for goods. Witnesses reported that more than twenty people were hit, five were killed on the spot, twelve were seriously injured, and seven sustained minor injuries, with rumors circulating that the death toll could be as high as eight.
The motive behind the ramming incident was apparently related to a theft at a supermarket, where the suspect allegedly fled the scene and intentionally struck pedestrians as he drove away.
Videos captured at the scene displayed a grim aftermath, with men and women lying injured on the ground amid pools of blood, portraying a scene of devastation. The driver, visibly distraught, was taken into custody by the police.
As of the time of reporting, local authorities had not issued any official statements, and there was limited media coverage of the incidents. The dissemination of information was heavily restricted, with social media platforms like Douyin censoring and removing videos related to the incidents for violating community guidelines.
Reports from the Public Security Sub-bureau in the urban area of Liuzhou City, Guangxi revealed a criminal case that occurred around 6:20 p.m. on May 2nd in a residential complex on Gaoxin South Road. The incident resulted in four fatalities, including one suspect, and one person injured but out of danger after receiving medical treatment.
According to local residents, the tragic event took place in Building 12 of the Jueling Residential Area, which was previously a staff family housing compound from the bankrupt state-owned Jueling Machinery Factory, marking the city’s first bankruptcy pilot for state-owned enterprises.
Eyewitnesses provided varying accounts of the fatal altercation. One informant, Fanghua, said that the perpetrators were family members of her boyfriend, with the middle-aged man from the second floor attacking his nephew’s family on the sixth floor, leading to multiple fatalities before the assailant was ultimately overpowered by the nephew, who sustained severe injuries.
Fanghua emphasized the confusion surrounding the details of the incident, as the families involved were distant relatives, and the exact cause of the dispute, whether over land or garbage issues, remained unclear.
Another resident, Haotian, residing in the third block of the residential complex, recounted a version of events where the assailant armed with an axe approached the sixth-floor apartment, resulting in a tragic series of fatal assaults on the family members before choosing to end his own life.
Alarming incidents involving violence have been on the rise in mainland China, as evidenced by the indiscriminate vehicle ramming in Chengdu High-tech Zone on May 1st, where the driver was apprehended brandishing a weapon. Witness reports indicated a significant number of casualties, painting a gruesome picture of the scene.
Reflecting on the series of distressing events, some internet users expressed concern over the deep-rooted animosity and conflicts within society, calling for awareness and unity among the populace against what they perceive as a common adversary—the Chinese Communist Party.
