The Los Angeles Chinese American Performing Arts Association (Los Angeles Chinese American Performing) will be hosting the “Dragon Roar Phoenix Singing Carnival” concert on July 6th (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at the Los Angeles Overseas Chinese Service Cultural Center in Alhambra. They have invited the renowned impersonator Liu Mingzhu, known as the “Little Yao Su Rong,” to perform on stage. The concert will feature popular Mandarin songs such as “Not Going Home Today,” “Sky of Taipei,” and “Night Fragrance,” welcoming music enthusiasts to join in the celebration.
This event marks the seventh annual concert organized by the Los Angeles Chinese American Performing Arts Association. President Zhuang Huang stated that music has the power to inspire and bring joy to people’s hearts. She hopes that through this musical carnival, more individuals can come together to appreciate the beauty of music. The association was founded in 1999, officially registered in California in 2007, and obtained non-profit status under 501(C)(3) in 2022. Currently, they have over 80 members, mostly consisting of Taiwanese international students, retired professionals from the business and political sectors, as well as a few second-generation immigrants. The members bond over music, actively support charitable activities, and frequently visit retirement homes to perform, providing companionship to the elderly through music. The concert will also offer entry tickets for the seniors to enjoy.
The “Dragon Roar Phoenix Singing Carnival” concert has specially invited Liu Mingzhu from Taiwan to be a guest performer in Los Angeles. Liu Mingzhu has participated in various singing competitions in Taiwan, winning numerous accolades. Her fame soared when she impersonated Yao Su Rong on the “Dragon and Tiger Variety King” show hosted by Zhang Fei and Fei Yuqing, ultimately catching the attention of Yao Su Rong herself. Yao personally gifted Liu Mingzhu over fifty music scores, making her the only authorized apprentice.
Since the Los Angeles Chinese American Performing Arts Association is a non-profit organization, the event itself is free and does not sell tickets, but there is a sponsorship fee of $40 for an entry pass. President Zhuang Huang mentioned, “Welcome to music enthusiasts in Southern California, let’s sing out our nostalgia and memories. Sing of the paths we have walked.” She believes that music can promote both physical and mental well-being, hoping to use this opportunity to help retired individuals stay youthful and create beautiful sunset moments together.
Cindy Wu, a board member of the Mountain View School District, expressed her delight in California’s strong emphasis on music and performing arts, and she is thrilled to see such musical events in Los Angeles. She hopes that in the future, the Mountain View District will also have Asian art programs where elementary students can learn Chinese songs, fostering cross-cultural exchanges.
The co-organizers of this concert include the Los Angeles Chinese Association, the Los Angeles Women’s New Movement, the Downey Lions Club, and the Los Angeles Women’s Committee.
