In response to the Chinese Communist Party’s claim of being impacted by a typhoon and implementing traffic control on northbound ships through the southern entrance of the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council stated that the CCP, under the guise of the typhoon, declaring control over Taiwan’s relevant sea areas, violates international norms such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Taiwan Coast Guard Administration rebuked the CCP for having no authority to implement traffic control in the Taiwan Strait and strongly condemned such actions.
The Guangdong Maritime Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party announced that due to the impact of Typhoon Baihaidu, traffic control was imposed on ships heading north through the southern entrance of the Taiwan Strait.
The Mainland Affairs Council of the Republic of China issued a press release stating that the CCP, using the approaching Typhoon Baihaidu as an excuse, claiming to control Taiwan’s relevant sea areas, has violated international norms such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The unreasonable and rude statements from relevant departments of the CCP demonstrate ignorance, disregard, and trampling of international order and norms. It is extremely ridiculous!
The Taiwan government emphasized that the CCP has no right to take any “control” or “jurisdiction” actions in Taiwan’s waters. Taiwan’s maritime affairs are its own responsibility, and the authorities in Beijing are urged to exercise self-restraint, abide by international norms, take care of their potential disasters, and refrain from meddling in Taiwan’s affairs.
The Coast Guard Administration of the Republic of China’s Ocean Affairs Council issued a press release pointing out that the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway, and according to international norms such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the principle of freedom of navigation in the high seas applies beyond territorial waters, and the CCP has no right to control this water area.
The Coast Guard Administration stated that the Republic of China has always respected the freedom of navigation in accordance with international law. Regarding China’s attempt to falsely claim jurisdiction under the guise of a typhoon, manipulate perception warfare, and attempt to turn the waters between Taiwan and mainland China into internal territorial waters through maritime control, the most severe condemnation is issued, and China is urged to abide by international norms to avoid undermining regional peace and stability.
The Coast Guard Administration emphasized that it will continue to use joint intelligence surveillance means to monitor the dynamics of the surrounding waters of Taiwan around the clock. Currently, no abnormal behavior of Chinese ships has been detected, nor have there been reports of shipping companies experiencing broadcast interference.
The Coast Guard Administration called upon cargo ships passing through this water area to ignore Chinese broadcasts and immediately report to relevant Taiwanese authorities if they receive such broadcasts. The Coast Guard Administration will take all necessary measures to ensure the freedom and safety of ship navigation.
