Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry: Enhancing Security Cooperation with the US to Bring Peace through Strength

On December 9, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that the US Congress released the reconciled version of the National Defense Authorization Act on the 7th. This act includes various provisions to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities and resilience. Taiwan will continue to steadily advance cooperation with the United States in security and other aspects, implementing the policy vision of “strength brings peace.”

The US House of Representatives unveiled the latest version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on the evening of the 7th, outlining the budget and policy direction for the Pentagon’s fiscal year 2026. The full text spans 3,086 pages, covering key issues such as nuclear weapons, missile defense, space operations, and military deployments in the Indo-Pacific region, with a focus on enhancing defense strategies against China and Russia.

The House version of the NDAA authorizes up to $1 billion in military aid to Taiwan for the fiscal year 2026. It also requires the Secretary of Defense to initiate a joint unmanned systems development and production plan with Taiwan before March 2026 for use by the US and Taiwanese military, in compliance with the Taiwan Relations Act.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated on the evening of December 8 that following the separate passage of their respective versions of the “NDAA 2026” by both houses of the US Congress, a reconciled version was released on December 7. This version includes multiple provisions to assist in strengthening Taiwan’s defense capabilities and resilience, deepening Taiwan-US security cooperation, and supporting clauses related to Taiwan’s international participation.

The Ministry pointed out that Minister Joseph Wu expressed gratitude for the bipartisan support from the US Congress through legislative actions, demonstrating steadfast support for Taiwan and the enhancement of Taiwan-US security cooperation. It was also noted that the National Security Strategy under the Trump administration highlighted Taiwan’s critical geopolitical position and emphasized US cooperation with allies to ensure security in the Taiwan Strait. The content of the released act once again underscores the consensus within the US executive and legislative branches on strengthening Taiwan’s security.

The Ministry emphasized that Taiwan will continue to steadily advance cooperation with the US in various aspects of security to realize the policy vision of “strength brings peace.”

Following the approval of the bill by both houses, it will be sent to US President Trump for signing to complete the legislative process. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will closely monitor the progress of the bill and maintain close communication with the US Congress and executive branch to deepen the Taiwan-US partnership.
