During the National Day holiday in China, Typhoon “Medim” hit Guangdong. According to the forecast from the Central Meteorological Department, “Medim” made landfall on the coastal areas of Guangdong on October 5th (Sunday). Meng Fanli, the Deputy Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, called for the entire province to swiftly enter a state of emergency preparedness.
The Central Meteorological Observatory issued a typhoon red alert at 18:00 on October 4th, stating that the center of Typhoon No. 21 this year, “Medim,” was located in the south-southeast direction of Xuweng County, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, about 520 kilometers north of the northern sea area of the South China Sea at 5:00 p.m. on the 4th, with the maximum wind speed near the center reaching level 12 (35 meters per second).
It is expected that “Medim” will move in a west-northwest direction at a speed of about 25 kilometers per hour, with the intensity continuing to strengthen, gradually approaching the western part of Guangdong and the eastern part of Hainan Island. It is projected to make landfall on the coast from Dianbai, Guangdong to Qionghai, Hainan around noon on the 5th. The maximum wind force could reach levels 14-15, bringing severe wind and rain impacts to western Guangdong.
According to the forecast from the Central Meteorological Observatory on October 5th, during the day, wind forces of levels 9-11 are expected in the northwestern part of the South China Sea, Qiongzhou Strait, northern part of the Beibu Gulf, southwestern coastal areas of Guangdong, coastal areas of Guangxi, eastern and northern coastal areas of Hainan Island, with gusts of levels 12-13, and wind forces in some areas or regions may reach levels 12-15, with gusts of levels 15-17.
From the evening of the 4th to the daytime of the 5th, there will be heavy to torrential rain in most parts of Hainan Island, particularly heavy rain in the northern part and locally extremely heavy rainfall. During the day on the 5th, there will be heavy to torrential rain in the southwestern part of Guangdong and the southeastern part of Guangxi, with locally heavy rainfall.
Furthermore, according to a joint announcement from the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources and the Meteorological Bureau on the 4th at 18:00, a blue alert for mountain flood disasters has been issued. It is expected that from 20:00 on the 4th to 20:00 on the 5th, mountain flood disasters may occur in some areas of western Henan, southwestern Guangdong, central-northern Hainan, northeastern Sichuan, southeastern Tibet, eastern and southern Shaanxi, and other regions (blue alert).
There is a higher possibility of mountain flood disasters in central-northern Hainan, northeastern Sichuan, and southern Shaanxi (yellow alert). Other areas may also experience mountain flood disasters due to locally heavy and persistent rainfall.
Starting from 20:00 on the 4th, a typhoon red alert has been activated for all districts in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong, with Zhanjiang entering a state of special emergency defense against the wind. It is expected to be impacted within the next 12 hours, with wind forces reaching level 12 or above.
Zhanjiang Airport announced on October 4th that all flights at Wuchuan International Airport in Zhanjiang will be cancelled on the 5th due to the impact of Typhoon “Medim.” Specific flight resumption information will be communicated to passengers through the “Zhanjiang Airport” WeChat public account.
