Iran International, based in the UK, cited an informed source revealing that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has submitted his formal resignation to the office of the Supreme Leader. Iran later denied this claim, calling it “fake news”.
According to the source, Pezeshkian emphasized in the resignation submitted on Sunday that the President and the government have been effectively excluded from significant national decision-making, leading to a power vacuum that allowed hardline factions within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to take control of state affairs.
Pezeshkian added that in this situation, he is unable to govern the country and fulfill the legal duties of the President, hence requesting an immediate resignation.
It is reported that it is unclear whether Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, will accept Pezeshkian’s resignation, but the content of the resignation indicates an unprecedented deep rift within the top power echelons of Iran.
Previously, there had been months of tension between the Iranian government and the Islamic Republic military-security apparatus. Iran International had reported earlier that the IRGC had gradually restricted the President’s powers and effectively controlled key government departments.
Sources revealed that the current situation has led to a political and administrative deadlock in Pezeshkian’s government, with diplomatic negotiations stalled and plans for cabinet restructuring remaining incomplete and unimplemented.
The Epoch Times has so far been unable to verify this information.
Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, the Deputy Chief of Communications and Information at the Iranian President’s Office, posted on social media platform X to dismiss Iran International’s report, calling it “fake news” and stating that Pezeshkian will not cease serving the people.
