The US Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions on Iran’s “shadow fleet” on Thursday, April 10th. The sanctions target an individual and two commercial groups based in India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) respectively, whose vessels have been involved in transporting oil for Iran.
The Treasury named Jugwinder Singh Brar, a UAE national of Indian origin, and his shipping company that owns nearly 30 vessels. In a statement, the Treasury mentioned that “Brar’s vessels have been transferring Iranian oil in high-risk Ship-To-Ship (STS) operations in waters near Iraq, Iran, UAE, and the Gulf of Oman.”
The statement also revealed sanctions on two entities located in UAE and India that own and operate Brar’s vessels, which have been commissioned by the National Iranian Oil Company and Iranian military to transport Iranian oil.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated, “The Iranian regime relies on Brar and his network of shippers and brokers to sell oil by any means necessary and to fund destabilizing activities for Iran.”
He added, “The US remains focused on dismantling the factors on which Iran’s oil exports depend, especially those seeking to profit from this trade.”
