Taiwan Joins IPAC; Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Demonstrating Unity and Cooperation in the Democratic Camp

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expressed its gratitude on the 30th for the “Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) Taipei Annual Meeting” passing the “IPAC Model Resolution 2758 for Resolutions of National Parliaments,” demonstrating concrete support for Taiwan and announcing new IPAC members from Taiwan and seven other countries, showcasing unity and cooperation among democratic allies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China issued a press release stating that the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) held its annual meeting in Taipei on the 30th, with a record 49 members from 23 countries and the European Parliament attending, marking the largest IPAC gathering in history. The annual meeting showed tangible support for Taiwan, opposed Chinese Communist intimidation, and passed the “IPAC Model Resolution for Resolutions of National Parliaments on UN Resolution 2758,” providing a reference for IPAC members to promote related resolutions in their respective national parliaments in the future.

Moreover, during the post-conference international press briefing, IPAC officially announced the inclusion of political figures from Taiwan, Colombia, Iraq, Malawi, Solomon Islands, Gambia, and Uruguay as new members. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sincere thanks for IPAC’s firm support for Taiwan.

President of the Republic of China, Lai Ching-te, was invited to deliver a keynote speech on “Taiwan’s Global Vision” at the “Taiwan Issues Session” of the IPAC Annual Meeting on the 30th, emphasizing Taiwan’s spirit of “democracy, peace, and prosperity” to become a global Taiwan, working hand in hand with global democratic partners for mutual prosperity. He also urged international allies to jointly wield the “democratic protection umbrella” to defend against authoritarian expansionism, safeguarding democratic partner countries from threats.

Vice President of the Republic of China, Hsiao Mei-chin, attended the international press briefing following the “Taiwan Issues Session” of the IPAC Annual Meeting to outline Taiwan’s continued collaboration with like-minded nations, upholding common values such as democracy and freedom, and maintaining the rule-based international order. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Li-kuo, also participated in the “Taiwan Issues Session” on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressing gratitude for IPAC’s support.

During the annual meeting, IPAC members discussed how Taiwan continues to face pressure from the Chinese Communist regime distorting UN Resolution 2758 and squeezing its international space, as well as Chinese attempts to harass Taiwan through a multifaceted gray zone strategy of politics, economy, military, and lawfare. Participants from various national parliaments unanimously agreed that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is essential for global security and prosperity. They recognized Taiwan’s crucial technological strength for the resilience of the global democratic supply chain. The annual meeting also passed the “IPAC Model Resolution for Resolutions of National Parliaments on UN Resolution 2758,” which will be promoted in member countries’ parliaments to take concrete actions in support of democratic Taiwan.

The model resolution points out that UN Resolution 2758 did not endorse the “One China Principle” as an international consensus, did not exclude Taiwan from participating in international organizations, does not affect countries’ sovereign decisions regarding their relationship with Taiwan, and calls for an immediate improvement in addressing the issue of the 23 million people in Taiwan lacking representation at the United Nations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China expressed its gratitude to IPAC for speaking out for justice on behalf of Taiwan, urging the international community to counteract the Chinese misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758 and China’s attempt to inaccurately link the resolution with the so-called “One China Principle.” The Ministry also highly praised IPAC’s initiative to hold the annual meeting in Taiwan, highlighting the international importance of the Taiwan Strait issue, and welcomed more democratic allies to witness Taiwan’s contributions to global peace and prosperity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its economic resilience and defense deterrence capabilities through President Lai Ching-te’s “Four Pillars of Peace” action plan, collaborate with IPAC and other like-minded international partners, uphold Taiwan Strait security and peace in the Indo-Pacific region, foster mutually beneficial economic and trade security, semiconductor supply chains, and defend the core values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law shared by the global democratic camp.
