Report: Government Reclaims Public Housing Unit of Nathan Law’s Mother in Hong Kong

According to reports, the mother of former Hong Kong pro-democracy activist and Demosistō chairman, Nathan Law, had her public housing unit in Eastern District Yat Tung Estate (I) repossessed by the government. The Housing Department confirmed to the media that the unit was repossessed due to rental arrears and violation of the lease agreement. The department issued an eviction notice in March this year to terminate the lease of the unit and completed the necessary procedures to reclaim it in June.

Recently, netizens posted on social media that the public housing unit in question had been taken back by the Housing Department, accompanied by a photo of a notice from the Housing Authority posted outside the unit. The notice stated that the Housing Authority had reclaimed the unit on June 3 and discovered 55 abandoned items inside, including a TV, refrigerator, and air conditioning unit. The Housing Authority has removed the items, and the original owner can reclaim them within 14 days of the notice. Any unclaimed items after the deadline will belong to the Housing Authority.

The Secretary for Security, John Lee, previously designated six “specified fugitives” under the National Security Law, including Nathan Law, and announced measures to be imposed on these individuals, such as “prohibition of providing funds or dealing with funds,” “prohibition of certain activities related to real estate,” “prohibition of joint ventures or partnerships with enterprises involving the fugitives,” and “cancellation of HKSAR passports,” among others.
