The Boeing 737 MAX-7 aircraft has finally received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States. This aircraft is the smallest model in Boeing’s best-selling 737 MAX series, and after nearly a decade of delays, it has finally obtained this certification.
In a statement released on Monday (August 3), the FAA announced that after nearly a decade of extensive review, they have issued the revised type certificate and updated production limitation record for the Boeing 737 MAX-7. This approval reflects years of continued work to address complex technical issues and complete thorough reviews of aircraft design and supplemental safety analysis.
During the entire certification process, the FAA conducted or directly reviewed significant work in key areas related to flight controls, system safety assessments, human factors engineering, crew alerts, and other critical areas involving new, complex, or safety issues. Boeing was also required to conduct testing, modify designs when necessary, and submit additional analysis data.
The statement also mentioned that before approving the MAX-7 certification, the FAA required Boeing to make several key improvements to this aircraft model, including updating flight control software and crew alert systems, as well as redesigning the engine anti-ice system. These improvements provide pilots with clearer information and alerts, while also preventing engine inlet overheating that could weaken surrounding structures.
The MAX-7 is the smallest model in Boeing’s latest generation of narrow-body jet aircraft series. Airlines like Southwest Airlines had hoped to put this aircraft into operation before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, following two crashes involving the already operational 737 MAX-8 in 2018 and 2019, resulting in a total of 346 fatalities, the FAA intensified its scrutiny, coupled with subsequent issues, leading to delays in the MAX-7 certification process.
Following the certification of the MAX-7 aircraft, airlines can finally start using it to transport passengers soon, although typically it takes a few months to integrate a new aircraft model into flight schedules.
After the announcement of the MAX-7 certification, Boeing’s stock rose over 5% in Monday afternoon trading.
