On February 28th, the Chairman of China’s well-known Baijiu (Chinese liquor) company Wuliangye, Zeng Congqin, was under investigation. Zeng’s predecessor, former Chairman Li Shuguang, had also been investigated previously.
The Sichuan Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision announced on February 28th that Zeng Congqin, the Secretary of the Communist Party Committee and Chairman of the board of directors of Wuliangye Group Co., Ltd. in Yibin, Sichuan Province, as well as the Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the board of directors of Yibin Wuliangye Co., Ltd., is suspected of “serious violations of discipline and laws” and is currently under investigation.
Wuliangye issued a statement that evening, confirming receipt of the “Case Filing Notice” and the “Detention Notice” issued by the Yibin City Supervisory Committee regarding Zeng Congqin.
According to reports in mainland China, Zeng Congqin was taken away for investigation on the afternoon of February 26th.
On February 27th, various liquor industry public accounts and social media platforms began circulating the news that “Zeng Congqin was taken away on the afternoon of February 26th at 1:30 pm,” although this information had not been officially confirmed at the time.
Zeng Congqin’s last public appearance was on February 24th when he chaired a meeting to review the company’s work after the Chinese New Year celebrations in 2026.
Public records show that Zeng Congqin, born in June 1968 in Yibin, Sichuan Province, has been working in Sichuan for a long time. Before joining Wuliangye, he had worked in local government positions in places such as Changning County and Cuiping District of Yibin City. Zeng Congqin joined Wuliangye in 2019 and took over as Chairman from former Chairman Li Shuguang in February 2022, becoming the top leader of Wuliangye. Li Shuguang was officially disclosed to have fallen from grace in January last year after stepping down.
Wuliangye is a state-owned Baijiu company held by the Yibin State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission in Sichuan.
