New York Man Pleads Guilty, Previously Threatened Family of Slain UnitedHealthcare CEO

A man in northern New York recently confessed to committing cyberstalking in federal court, as he left multiple threatening and harassing voicemail messages for the family members of the slain CEO of United HealthCare, following the well-known shooting incident.

According to federal prosecutors, 40-year-old Shane Daley from Galway, about 40 miles north of Albany, was charged with repeatedly calling a relative of the slain CEO Brian Thompson shortly after Thompson was shot dead in December 2024, leaving voicemails containing threatening and insulting content.

In the voicemails, Daley not only gloated over Thompson’s murder but also threatened that his family and children should suffer the same fate. As part of a plea agreement, he admitted to making those calls.

During the trial of the Thompson murder case, the prosecution argued that the motive of the killer was his dissatisfaction with the “corporate greed” in the health insurance industry.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that Daley’s actions deliberately exacerbated the suffering of the victims’ family members at their most painful moment.

Daley is set to be sentenced on July 17 this year, facing a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

This case also highlights the ongoing dissatisfaction within American society towards the health insurance system in the aftermath of Thompson’s murder.
