A mainland Chinese lawyer has publicly disclosed materials related to a case of theft, defamation, and intentional destruction of corpses online. According to reports from mainland media, the case involves a biological materials company stealing and reselling thousands of corpses for the production of “homogeneous bone implant materials,” with revenues reaching 380 million yuan. The company involved is a state-owned enterprise under China National Nuclear Corporation. Currently, several mainland media reports have been deleted in succession.
On the afternoon of August 8th, Lawyer Yi Shenghua posted on Weibo, saying, “Yesterday afternoon, I chatted with a lawyer friend and learned about such a case, which made my hair stand on end. After practicing criminal law for many years and handling all kinds of cases, I was shocked and angry for the first time. Who doesn’t have deceased loved ones? Who can imagine their loved ones being subjected to such ‘brutal dismemberment’ even after death (as written in the indictment)? Who knows if the ashes of their loved ones they received are real?”
Lawyer Yi Shenghua expressed that what most disappointed him was that under current laws, these criminals could face a maximum punishment of less than three years, and there is no fine imposed.
He questioned, “With such huge profits and such lenient treatment, how many more people will dare to break the law?”
An hour later, Lawyer Yi Shenghua posted again on Weibo, saying, “Received a call from the Beijing Municipal Justice Bureau, discussing with me whether the exposure of unresolved cases was appropriate. Thank you for the concern from the staff of the Justice Bureau. In order to change this anger-inducing reality, I am willing to bear the corresponding cost.”
According to a report by The Paper on the afternoon of August 8th, Lawyer Yi Shenghua’s online disclosure of the case materials showed that from January 2015 to July 2023, Shanxi Aurui Bio-material Co., Ltd. (referred to as Shanxi Aurui) was suspected of illegally purchasing corpses and body parts from Sichuan, Guangxi, Shandong, and other places as raw materials. After processing illegally obtained corpses and bones during the purchase and production process, they were used to produce “homogeneous bone implant materials” products.
The report stated that the total operating income from 2015 to 2023 amounted to 380 million yuan. During the investigation of the case, the police seized over 18 tons of raw materials and semi-finished products related to the company, as well as 34,077 finished products.
The case materials indicated that from 2017 to 2019, the suspect Su Moumou controlled four funeral homes’ crematoriums through subcontracting, equity participation, and placing personnel. Su Moumou instructed the staff arranged in the crematoriums to steal corpses and brutally dismember them in the cremation workshop before transporting them back to their company, where some of the bodies were further dismembered.
Su Moumou admitted that the four crematoriums provided over four thousand human skeletons to his company.
It was reported that there were a total of 75 criminal suspects in the case, involving entities such as Shanxi Aurui Company, Sichuan Hengpu Technology Co., Ltd., Shandong Qingdao University Affiliated Hospital Liver Disease Center, Guilin Medical College, Guilin Funeral Home, Pingle County Funeral Home, Yongfu County Funeral Home, and other units. The case also involved the crematoriums controlled by Su Moumou in Shuifu City, Yunnan Province, Bana…
