Recently returning from the United States to Hong Kong after filming “The Final Chapter of Kowloon Walled City,” Daniel Wu sported a bald head and beard look. He appeared on the YouTube show “Let’s Go Eat with Brian” hosted by his friend Brian, a member of the group “24Herbs,” where they savored top-grade Wagyu kaiseki cuisine together. To everyone’s surprise, Wu complained that the food provided by the crew was “really bad” towards the end of the meal, revealing that despite multiple complaints, no improvements had been made, sparking heated discussions among netizens.
In the show, Daniel Wu and Brian tasted various cuts of Wagyu beef, with the Matsusaka cut receiving particular praise for its deliciousness. As they reached the end of the meal, Wu couldn’t help but express how happy he was to enjoy such exquisite food, stating that it was much tastier than the food provided by the crew.
Reflecting on his experience filming “Cold War” in the past, Wu reminisced that the box lunches provided by the crew made him feel like he was “home,” believing that there should always be box lunches on a film set. However, during the recent filming of a new movie, Wu was quite shocked by how unappetizing the crew’s box lunches were, emphasizing that they were not just “ordinary or acceptable,” but truly “really bad!”
In a semi-joking manner, Daniel Wu admitted his confusion about the reasons behind the poor quality of the food, suggesting, “Maybe it’s cheaper, or perhaps someone in our crew has a relative running this restaurant? I don’t know!” He disclosed that many people on the crew had raised complaints about the food, but the situation had not improved, with only about 10 dishes constantly rotating. As a result, he now opts to prepare his own lunch, stating, “I make my own lunch.”
Apart from the unappetizing lunches, Wu also mentioned that during the two-month filming period, he had been having fast food for supper every night, saying, “I haven’t had McDonald’s in over ten years, but I had it for supper for two consecutive nights because I had no other choice. After that, I started bringing my own supper.” Though he did not directly name the production crew, considering that the only project he is currently filming is “The Final Chapter of Kowloon Walled City,” speculation and discussions were raised among many people. Some netizens jokingly commented, “Which crew’s box lunch is so scary?” while others hoped the crew would improve the quality of the food soon.
Starring actors such as Louis Koo, Sammo Hung, Richie Ren, Raymond Lam, and Aaron Kwok, “Kowloon Walled City Siege,” released in 2024, received critical acclaim in Hong Kong. Given the success of the first installment, the film production announced the filming of two sequels, officially expanding into the “Walled City Universe.” “The Head of Kowloon Walled City” depicts the prequel story of Tornado (played by Louis Koo) and King of Assassins (played by Aaron Kwok) in their younger days, while “The Final Chapter of Kowloon Walled City” continues the story of the first installment’s aftermath and has already started filming in 2026, achieving promising overseas presale results at international film festivals.
