3 people died in outdoor rockfall accident in Jiangxi

On March 14th, a outdoor rock climbing accident occurred near Yanlie Mountain in Shuangzhong Town, Hukou County, Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, resulting in the deaths of three people.

According to a video released by netizens, on the 14th, a group in Jiujiang, Jiangxi, who identified themselves as outdoor enthusiasts, went rock climbing with a non-professional guide. They descended with outdated equipment and without proper safety measures, ultimately leading to the tragic outcome.

On March 15th, Hukou County issued a statement indicating that the accident happened around 14:26 on the 14th near Yanlie Mountain in Shuangzhong Town, Hukou County, Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province. When emergency medical staff arrived at the scene upon receiving the report, all three fallen individuals showed no signs of life.

Upon preliminary investigation, the area where the incident occurred was described as an “undeveloped mountainous area.” The three individuals fell to their deaths during the rock climbing process due to falling limestone rocks.

Rock climbing, also known as cliff rappelling, is a type of abseiling activity that involves descending vertically from the top of a cliff to the ground using specialized rope equipment. This sport falls within the category of high-end adventure sports and began to be gradually promoted in mainland China in the early 21st century, with commercial organizations starting to organize rock climbing activities in 2016.
