The 2024 International Bonsai Conference was held from April 25th to 28th at the Westchase Marriott Hotel in Houston, organized by the Houston Bonsai Society. The event was attended by delegates from China led by Chairman Chen Chang of the International Bonsai Club (BCI), renowned Taiwanese master Min Hsuan Lo, as well as representatives from various countries. Former President of the Houston Bonsai Society (HBS), He-Xing Cai, mentioned that Mayor Whitmire of Houston issued a welcome statement, referring to the event as a “Bonsai Art Celebration.” With the full support of the Lone Star Bonsai Federation (LSBF), the exhibition was successfully held, with LSBF comprising of 11 bonsai clubs from Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.

BCI’s current Chairman, Chen Chang, introduced that more than 60 countries are involved in the International Bonsai Association. Through annual exhibitions, artists and works from different countries and regions come together to promote and enhance the level of bonsai art. Each region has its unique techniques and tree varieties, fostering mutual learning and exchange. BCI Secretary-General Xiwen Wu explained that the exhibited bonsai trees reflect the characteristics of different regions through their roots and layouts. For example, in Taiwan, branches are tied into shapes; while in Lingnan region, emphasis is on natural growth using pruning for shaping. Winning works at the exhibition receive certificates, cash prizes, publication in global magazines, interviews, and some winning bonsai trees, over a hundred years old, are family heirlooms valued at over 10 million yuan.

HBS’s current President, Anthony Cutola, presented his award-winning bonsai to the International Bonsai Association to bring back to China. Another winner, Smith, who has been studying bonsai for 13 years, prefers the style of Chinese tree species and uses Eastern methods. Bonsai is a great stress-relieving method, providing a sense of calm and relaxation. Houston’s Zhuang Jiaxiang, also a winner, described his award-winning Ficus bonsai without leaves, maintained perfectly after years of care. Apart from patience and a calm attitude, nurturing it provides a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

Four international masters demonstrated bonsai techniques: world-renowned bonsai artist Bjorn Bjorholm, Min Hsuan Lo from Taiwan, Sergio Cuan from New York, and Sean Smith from Pennsylvania. Additionally, famous bonsai teachers from Puerto Rico and Mexico, such as Enrique Constaño, provided explanations and guidance on site. Beginners learned to cultivate a small tree through pruning and shaping branches and roots to resemble the appearance of old trees in nature during the teaching sessions.
