Space-time of Marc: United States passes military aid bill, long-range missiles to aid Ukraine

After six months of deadlock, the US House of Representatives finally passed a bill providing $60.84 billion in aid to Ukraine, with $13.8 billion designated for the purchase of advanced weapons systems for Ukraine, another $13.8 billion for buying US defense systems, $9 billion for economic assistance to Ukraine, over $13 billion for replenishing US weapon stockpiles, and $11 billion for supporting US allies in Europe.

The bill was also passed in the Senate on Tuesday. President Biden stated that once the Congress passed it, he would immediately sign it to meet Ukraine’s “urgent battlefield needs.” Even if this aid to Ukraine bill can be established quickly, it will still take some time for US military supplies to reach the front lines. In contrast, Russia may launch more ground offensives sooner due to the new US military assistance. Improving the current unfavorable situation faced by the Ukrainian military, especially on the front lines, may require more time.

Facing a shortage of ground weapons, Ukraine intensified its air strikes on targets within Russia. Late on April 20, Ukraine launched large-scale air strikes on eight Russian states, targeting the energy infrastructure in those states, hitting at least three substations and an energy storage facility.

Furthermore, the Ukrainian military once again used the US-provided Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to attack Russian military bases. On April 17, Ukrainian forces launched ATACMS attacks on a Russian air force base in northern Sevastopol, Crimea, destroying the S-400 air defense system there. The advanced S-400 air defense system not only failed to intercept the ATACMS ballistic missile but was also destroyed. Are Russia’s radars and air defense systems paper tigers?

To halt the Russian offensive and maintain the front line, Ukraine needs more spear and shield. The spear includes various offensive weapons such as drones, artillery, shells, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, long-range missiles, ground-attack missiles, F-16 fighter jets, and more, while the shield comprises electronic warfare systems, air defense systems, etc. It is expected that the Pentagon will soon announce a new military aid plan, and we eagerly await to see the contents of this massive package, including how many shells it contains.
