News Update: New Jersey Faces Two Major Fires Over the Weekend
Over the weekend in New Jersey, two significant fire incidents occurred consecutively, raising concerns in the community. One fire in Union City is suspected to be an act of arson, resulting in the tragic death of a 74-year-old woman and leaving over 20 people homeless. In a separate incident earlier in Ironbound, Newark, a fire broke out in multiple buildings, injuring six firefighters and forcing around 60 residents to evacuate. The occurrence of two major fires within 24 hours has sparked widespread attention, with investigations ongoing to determine the cause of the fires.
The most recent fire took place on Saturday, April 18, around 3:45 PM in the area of Bergen Turnpike and 38th Street in Union City. Upon arrival, firefighters found several buildings engulfed in flames, with intense fire and thick smoke billowing into the sky at the scene.
Witnesses described hearing explosions accompanied by the fire, starting with a series of loud bangs followed by dense smoke rising into the air.
The incident led to temporary road closures in the vicinity, including Bergen Turnpike and Grand Ave, until firefighters brought the blaze under control. Additionally, the fire affected power facilities, resulting in power outages in parts of North Bergen and Weehawken.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office (HCPO) revealed that firefighters discovered the body of a 74-year-old woman in a residence at 3808 Bergen Turnpike while extinguishing the fire. The authorities have initiated an investigation into the case as a possible arson, although the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The fire displaced a total of 22 individuals, with the American Red Cross providing emergency relief such as temporary shelter, food, and clothing to at least 18 affected residents. Multiple departments, including the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, are conducting a joint investigation into the incident.
Prior to this, on Friday night around 10:30 PM, a commercial building in the Ironbound area of Newark on Jefferson Street caught fire, spreading rapidly to at least four nearby buildings, including several multi-family residences.
Footage from the scene depicted flames fiercely shooting out of windows amid blaring alarms, with over 100 firefighters rushing to the location. After battling the blaze for several hours, firefighters managed to contain the fire around 3:30 AM on Saturday.
Residents recalled the harrowing moments of the incident, witnessing smoke emerging from the building and families fleeing with children and pets in the midst of chaos.
Some residents mentioned having only seconds to escape with their two young daughters, while others described the fire rapidly spreading like an explosion, quickly engulfing the entire building.
Authorities reported that six firefighters sustained injuries during the firefighting process, fortunately without life-threatening conditions. Around 60 residents evacuated safely but are currently unable to return to their homes.
The Red Cross has provided temporary accommodation and basic necessities to at least 15 families affected by the fire. Investigations into the cause of the fires are ongoing.
