Beware of “Staged Accidents” Scams? California Insurance Department Urges Vigilance

Four Southern California drivers appeared in court on Wednesday, May 27, to face allegations of orchestrating fake car accidents. Officials from the California Department of Insurance warned drivers to stay vigilant and guard against this type of staged accidents.

An investigation conducted by the “Inland Empire Auto Insurance Fraud Task Force,” consisting of the California Department of Insurance, California Highway Patrol (CHP), and the County District Attorney’s Office, revealed that criminals were planning a series of deliberate car collisions to defraud insurance companies. Some of these premeditated accidents involved intentional collisions between acquaintances, while others targeted innocent drivers.

Detectives found that the defendants who appeared in court on Wednesday were friends. On June 8, 2025, they planned the staged accident, purposefully crashing their vehicles into each other. After the accident, all four sought medical treatment, trying to fake injuries to exaggerate the severity and claim higher insurance compensation. The estimated economic loss from that accident was around $36,000.

On April 21, 2025, two of them were also involved in another staged accident in Montclair, targeting an innocent driver. Authorities believe there may be more victims who have encountered similar accidents.

The California Department of Insurance reminds all drivers that if they suspect they have been a victim of a staged accident, they should immediately contact the California Department of Insurance at 909-919-2200.
