Former Front Desk Director of Guangdong Radio and Television Station, Zhang Huijian, Falls from Grace Six Years After Stepping Down

On May 13, former director of Guangdong Radio and Television Station, Zhang Huijian, was officially announced to have fallen from grace by the authorities, more than six years after stepping down from his position as director.

According to a statement from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China on Monday (May 13), Zhang Huijian, the former party secretary and director of Guangdong Radio and Television Station, is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law, and is currently undergoing disciplinary review and investigation by the disciplinary commission and supervisory commission of Guangdong Province.

Public records show that Zhang Huijian is a native of Meixian District, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, and has been working at Guangdong Television Station since 1978.

During his career, Zhang Huijian has held various positions at the station, including head of the news department, deputy director, assistant director, head of the news department, and deputy director. In January 2004, he was appointed as the director of Guangdong Television Station.

In April 2014, Guangdong Radio and Television Station was officially established through the integration of the original Guangdong Southern Broadcasting & Television Media Group, Guangdong Radio, Guangdong TV, and Southern Television. In May of the same year, Zhang Huijian became the director of Guangdong Radio and Television Station, a position he held until February 28, 2018.

On January 27, 2018, Zhang Huijian was appointed as the deputy head of the Cultural and Historical Literature Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and he stepped down in 2023.

Zhang Huijian has also served as the president of the Guangdong Radio and Television Association and as a part-time vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles. On the morning of May 13, the official website of the Guangdong Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles deleted Zhang’s photo and information from the “About Us” section.

In recent times, officials within China’s radio and television system have continued to fall from grace.

On April 22, just 10 days after retiring, Former Chairman of China Radio and Television Inner Mongolia Network Co., Ltd., Fu Haibo, was officially announced to have fallen from grace.

On April 16, former deputy minister of the Henan Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department and former director of the Henan Radio and Television Station, Zhu Xiayan, was officially announced to have fallen from grace.

On March 28, former Party Secretary of Tianjin Radio and Television Station, Wan Ke, was officially announced to have fallen from grace.
