Currently, the southern region of China is undergoing the most extensive heatwave of the year, with many areas entering the sweltering summer mode ahead of schedule. From May 26th to 28th, the southern part of Jiangnan to South China is dubbed the “steaming core area,” with provinces like Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan, and Jiangxi enduring hot and humid conditions around the clock. The heat index in Guangzhou has climbed to around 47°C.
According to the observations and statistics from the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Department, as of 3:00 PM on May 28th, the high-temperature weather in Guangdong continues, with Fengshun National Basic Meteorological Station recording the highest temperature in the province at 38.6°C.
In Guangzhou, the Guangzhou National Basic Meteorological Station recorded a high temperature of 36.9°C on the 28th. Taking into account non-national basic meteorological stations, the Huangsha Port Meteorological Observatory in Shamian Street, Liwan District, recorded a temperature of 41.6°C. Areas like Zengcheng, Huadu, Baiyun, Conghua, and Yuexiu also saw temperatures exceeding 40°C at non-national basic meteorological stations.
According to reports by China News Network, on the mornings of May 27th and 28th, cities and counties such as Zhanjiang, Maoming, northern Guangdong, northern Pearl River Delta, and northeastern Guangdong experienced high temperatures ranging from 35°C to 38°C. The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau forecasts that most parts of the province will continue to experience scorching heat on the 28th, with temperatures remaining between 35°C and 38°C in some cities and counties.
On May 26th, Yunfu recorded the highest temperature in Guangdong Province at 38.6°C.

Apart from Guangdong Province, many other southern regions are enduring the high temperatures and sultry weather.
According to a report by the New Express News under the Yangcheng Evening News Group on May 27th, cities like Guangzhou, Haikou, Ganzhou, and Hengyang may easily surpass 40°C in daytime heat index readings. Among them, Guangzhou could reach a heat index of around 47°C, while Hengyang in Hunan could hit 45°C, and Nanning in Guangxi could reach around 43°C. It’s not just hot and unbearable during the day; nighttime heat index readings in these cities also hover around 30°C, creating a 24-hour “natural sauna.”
